Weather and Climate affect all walks of human life and socio-economic sectors such as human health, food production, water security, sustainable energy and the state of the Earth environment. Recently, the whole mankind is eager to know about the fate of the planet consequent to the global warming and is anxious on its effects on the above sectors. However, the true nature of regional variations under the global warming stress can only be realized if and when we understand well the variations in weather and climate as they are outcomes of scale-interactions in the global climate system.

Rapid progresses in the climate studies have identified several new modes of climate variations that influence the regional weather and climate. For example, various regional weather extremes have been identiļ¬ed as outcomes of the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) after its seminal discovery in 1999. Subtropical dipoles of the southern Indian, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans influence the local climates of respective rim countries, too. Even the tropical Pacific Ocean has seen a new paradigm of climate variations. The new mode of variation identified as the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Modoki has occurred more frequently in recent decades and influenced the regional climate in the world differently from ENSO. Quite recently, a new regional mode of climate variation called "Ningaloo Niño" is identified off Western Australia. This mode is shown to influence the coastal ecosystem as well as the regional climate of Australia.

Therefore, we are in a very promising time to discuss these recent progresses in climate variability in the background of past and present discoveries.  The symposium is arranged to provide a platform for those discussions. In addition to process studies, the symposium will address progresses and challenges in the predictability studies of these new climate variations in addition to the canonical ENSO and other modes. Leading international scientists and active researchers of JAMSTEC will join to speak at the symposium and to discuss their new research results for better understanding of our climate system.

This symposium is organized in conjunction with another climate related workshop "SCALE INTERACTIONS IN CLIMATE VARIABILITY" hosted by Climate Variation Predictability and Applicability Research Program, RIGC, JAMSTEC on 1st November to form "INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIA ON RECENT PROGRESSES IN CLIMATE VARIABILITY STUDY".
