Substances such as biopolymers, membranes, cells, and gels are called soft matter. In soft matter science, biology, chemistry, and physics can deal with the same subject. The extremobiosphere that forms around the most fascinating soft matter, living beings, provides unique opportunities not only for biologists but also for chemists and physicists. The Soft Matter and Extremophiles Research Team investigates the extremobiosphere using an interdisciplinary approach to examine the potential of extremophiles as useful resources for novel technologies and materials.
