Bringing our youth into contact with the cutting-edge, world-class, science performed aboard the D/V Chikyu, CDEX/JAMSTEC provides and organizes lectures, field excursions, and ship tours for middle school students. We also support the International Earth Science Olympiad with field trips and Chikyu tours. During the 2014, CDEX/JAMSTEC collaborated with the Japan Geological Union’s annual meeting in Yokohama, together with the city of Yokohama, to give high school students the hands-on opportunity to investigate deep-sea core samples. During the US’s JOIDES Resolution’s port call in Yokohama, CDEX supported the United States Implementing Organization (USIO) for the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) ship tours of their deep-sea drilling vessel for Japanese high schools students. Science lectures in English for the students helped promote IODP and the spirit of international science collaboration.
