Ultra-Deep Coring Bit

The environmental conditions for ultra-deep drilling and coring (>5000 meters below sea floor) become more and more difficult as you drill deeper. Not only does the rock formation itself become harder and harder, ambient temperature and pressure also increase. These conditions slow down drilling because they greatly increase the wear and tear on the drilling bits. CDEX/JAMSTEC is developing Polycrystalline Diamond Compact (PDC) and Impregnated Diamond coring bits that will last longer while drilling the extremely hard rock formations and in high pressure and high temperatures.

Objectives
