CDEX/JAMSTEC developed the Hybrid-PCS to meet scientists’ requirements for collecting in situ pressure-sealed core samples. The pressure core sampler, originally developed for methane hydrate resources research in Japan, has been adapted for scientific use aboard the D/V Chikyu.
- A ball-valve isolation chamber can collect and transfer core samples that maintain in situ pressures.
- This system allows scientists to study core samples from pressure- and temperature-sensitive formations (e.g. methane hydrates).
