About IODP
IODP LOGO Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) is an international drilling program for scientific deep-sea research led by Japan and U.S., which conducted from October 2003 to September 2013. The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) started in October 2013 with the support of 26 nations.
This new international research program will bring together the Earth, ocean, atmospheric, and life sciences with a common goal of understanding the Earth's past, present and future. The program's science plan, Illuminating Earth's Past, Present, and Future, addresses pressing scientific priorities and social concerns within four themes: Climate and Ocean Change, Biosphere Frontiers, Earth Connections and Earth in Motion.
IODP greatly expands the reach of these previous programs by using multiple drilling platforms, including Japanese D/V CHIKYU, U.S. Joides Resolution, and European Mission Specific Platform (MSP), to achieve its scientific goals.
For more information about IODP, its mission, expedition schedules, program members, publications, and outreach materials, go to
IODP web portal (http://www.iodp.org/)

On November, 2004, the President of IODP-MI (Central Management Office of IODP) visited JAMSTEC Yokosuka Headquarters and signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the IODP-MI and the JAMSTEC concerning the IODP.

By this signing, IODP-MI, Central Management Office of the whole program, and JAMSTEC, CHIKYU management agency, officially established the formal framework of cooperation concerning IODP.CDEX operates D/V CHIKYU as the Japan Implementing Organization in order to create new frontiers of science and technology.

These principal themes are outlined in the Initial Science Plan during 1st decade. The Japanese Scientific Drilling Promotion Committee has discussed and the following five projects were identified.

1) Mantle activity and terrestrial system fluctuation
2) Crustal movements and terrestrial system fluctuation
3) Dynamics and material circulation of subduction and terrestrial system fluctuation
4) Long term measurement of borehole
5) Strategy for researching the underground biosphere
