Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) is an international drilling program
for scientific deep-sea research led by Japan and U.S., which started in October 2003. IODP explores
Earth's history and structure recorded in seafloor sediments and rocks, and monitors subseafloor environments. |
|
IODP greatly expands the reach of these previous programs
by using multiple drilling platforms, including Japanese D/V CHIKYU, U.S. Joides
Resolution, and European Mission
Specific Platform (MSP),
to achieve its scientific goals.

On November, 2004, the President of IODP-MI (Central Management
Office of IODP) visited JAMSTEC Yokosuka Headquarters and signed the Memorandum of Understanding between
the IODP-MI and the JAMSTEC concerning the IODP.
By this signing, IODP-MI, Central Management Office of the whole program, and JAMSTEC, CHIKYU management
agency, officially established the formal framework of cooperation concerning IODP.CDEX operates D/V
CHIKYU as the Japan Implementing Organization in order to create new frontiers of science and technology. |

These principal themes are outlined in the Initial Science
Plan during 1st decade. The Japanese Scientific Drilling Promotion Committee has discussed and the following
five projects were identified.
1) Mantle activity and terrestrial system fluctuation
2) Crustal movements and terrestrial system fluctuation
3) Dynamics and material circulation of subduction and terrestrial system fluctuation
4) Long term measurement of borehole
5) Strategy for researching the underground biosphere
