2007 November 5 (Day 46)
Weather: Rain
Site: C0005 (NT2-01-E) (33°13’ N, 136°43’ E)
Science Operations on Deck: Spud the pilot hole at 2446.5 m water depth at 01:00 a.m. on 5 November. First jet-in to 50 meters below the seafloor (mbsf) and then rotary drilled to 524 mbsf without any problem. When trying to make short trip, observed pull, and worked through packed off by increasing pump rate. At 20:15 p.m., stuck pipe at 461 mbsf and became free after applying torque and work pipe. Then circulate bottoms up and decided to pull out due to worsening hole conditions. Moved the ship to the next site (NT2-01G) from upstream location at 05:00 on 6 November for ROV launch.
Science Operations in Labs: Review process continued to Site C0003 reports. Science party began working on Site C0004 LWD data. Science party met and discussed on sonic processed data and publication schedule. Lab technicians had bi-weekly department safety meeting, and continued setting up instruments, MSCL-C, core splitter, SQUID, EA, GCs, carbonate analyzer.
