October 10, 2009 (Day 40)
Weather: Cloudy
Location: Near Shingu Port
Retrieval of five transponders at C0012 was finished at 14:10 yesterday. We headed to Shingu Port and are waiting for disembarkation as of 6:00. Scientists finished their reports. Lab staffs and Curator are wrapping up sample boxes and prepare for shipment. The expedition comes to an end, and we will leave the ship at 11:30.
We would like to appreciate to all shipboard crew for their hard work, and all of those who have supported this project.

October 9, 2009 (Day 39)
Weather: Fine
Location: On transit to C0011
After recovery of sea conditions, we started moving to our drilling sites at 09:00 for retrieval of transponders. Scientists work on finalizing their reports. Lab staffs and Curator are wrapping up sample boxes and prepare for shipment. Our disembarkation date will not be fixed until the completion of transponder retrieval.

October 8, 2009 (Day 38)
Weather: Rain
Location: Typhoon evacuation point (31°50’N / 139°00’E)
We arrived at a safe point near Aoga-shima at 18:00. The ship could not keep the position in DP mode at 22:45. We continued waiting on weather in Auto Head mode. Thin sections were all produced and petrologist Shasa Labanieh continues observation. Scientists work on finalizing their reports. Lab staffs and Curator are wrapping up sample boxes and prepare for shipment. The end of our expedition is approaching, but our disembarkation date has not yet fixed due to uncertainties in weather and in recovery of remaining transponders.

October 7, 2009 (Day 37)
Weather: Rain
Location: Site C0012 (32°45’N / 136°55’E)
Wireline logging tool was lowered, but the tool could not pass through so that we gave up operation and the tools were retrieved. No scientific data was acquired by wireline logging. We started moving to South of Hachijo Island for typhoon evacuation. All sampling and measurement were completed. Thin section production from remaining cores continued.

October 6, 2009 (Day 36)
Weather: Overcast
Location: Site C0012 (32°45’N / 136°55’E)
Wireline logging tool was rigged up and lowered through the drill pipe. Time limitation in logging operation is becoming tighter with time, due to expected arrival of typhoon and rough hole conditions. Co-Chief Scientists and Logging Staff Scientist have prepared a plan for reduced number of runs of logging, and now their plan is only one run. Sampling of remaining core was started in Lab. Lab technicians are making thin sections from newly sampled interval. Science Party had a site summary meeting of C0012B, although logging scientists are still waiting for their data to be delivered.

October 5, 2009 (Day 35)
Weather: Rain
Location: Site C0012 (32°45’N / 136°55’E)
Cores were made open for sample requesters to claim their sampling locations. Actual sampling will take place tomorrow, after clearing conflicts. Co-chiefs and Logging Staff Scientist are trying to optimize the logging plan to make the most of the limited time window. Time limitation is due to difficulties in operation and also due to typhoon attack expected this week. Captain expects that we will have to evacuate from our drilling site once typhoon approaches. Before the typhoon attack, science party took a group picture with ship crew. The expedition is entering the final stretch.

October 4, 2009 (Day 34)
Weather: Cloudy
Location: Site C0012 (32°45’N / 136°55’E)
During a wiper trip, running back down failed several times. Attempts to ream down the interval resulted in getting into a probable side-track. Efforts were made to get back to the original hole, but we decided to drill down the side track hole for wire line logging operation. We stopped drilling at 561 mbsf (meters below seafloor) at 3:00. Based on quick lithology description of whole round pieces, Co-chief scientists decided not to take whole round samples, except one for Anelastic Strain Recovery measurement. All pieces were split, curated and were going to be described by petrologist. Onboard petrologist Shasa Labanieh works on visual description. Before the anticipated start of wireline logging operation, science party had a short meeting and Logging Staff Scientist Yoshinori Sanada presented logging plan.
