| CHIKYU open house at Yokohama and Yokosuka, Japan |
 |
|
| The first open house offering the public a
chance to visit D/V CHIKYU, which has capability to drill into the Mantle, was held in Yokohama and Yokosuka
from September 10 -12.
Many people came to the port before opening time and many simply stared at the
massive ship, almost unable to focus her top.
The on-board tour started from the cinema room on the upper
deck, passed through mess rooms, cabins, and went upstairs to the Lab area to get a look at the many
state-of-the-art analysis devices and get a hands-on chance to inspect real core samples.
The tour went to the Bridge where the vessel is controlled
and steered. After that, people turned the outside of the ship, looking up the Derrick (the drill tower),
which rises 130 meters above the ocean surface, and saw the Drill Floor on their right. The tour finished
at the Riser pipe racks and the huge Blow-Out Preventer.
One visitor said that “It is great fun to see
the huge machines and unusual tools that I would never get to see in my daily life.” |
