The third D/V CHIKYU open ship was held at Kinjo pier, port
of Nagoya from September 17 to 19.
The Nagoya event kicked off with an opening ceremony organized by an NPO corporation (“Chikyu-no-kai”)
and about 7,000 people visited the ship during three days.
At the beginning of the tour, participants
attended an instructional presentation at the Port Messe, Nagoya exhibition hall where they learned why
and how D/V CHIKYU will explore the earth. Then, they went
to D/V CHIKYU by bus. After getting off the bus, they climbed up the silver gangway looking up
at the starboard of the huge ship.
The tour started on D/V CHIKYU’s Upper deck, the location
of the main meeting room, video/cinema room and the mess hall. |

Visitors experienced the full range of sights and sounds onboard D/V CHIKYU: ship noise from engines
and ventilation systems, the feel of the cabins, labs, bridge and working areas, the view from 60m above
the ocean on the drilling catwalk, and the sight of the heavy industrial drilling equipment; all of which
are unique to Japan’s premier scientific drilling vessel.
