======================================== CHIKYU MAIL NEWS Vol.108, Sept 5th 2008 This mail news service provides you with information about the Deep Sea Drilling Vessel "Chikyu" and science and technology for the IODP Earth exploration. CHIKYU HAKKEN WEB SITE http://www.jamstec.go.jp/chikyu/ ======================================== ---------------------------------------- [Update] NanTroSEIZE: Call for Applicants http://www.jamstec.go.jp/chikyu/eng/news/20080901.html ---------------------------------------- The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) is currently accepting applications from prospective scientific participants for two Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Experiment (NanTroSEIZE) drilling operations, including the first IODP riser drilling operation. Expedition 319, scheduled March to July 2009, will conduct riser drilling in the Kumano forearc basin to a target depth of 2500 meters below the sea floor (proposed Site NT2-11), and riserless drilling across the shallow branch of the mega-splay fault at NT2-01J (close to Site C0004) to prepare cased holes for future deployment of long-term borehole observatories. The expedition science party will consist of 30-36 members, with 10 to 13 scientists always aboard, deployed in a staggered rotation to insure continuity of scientific operations. Most data will be acquired through cuttings analysis, logging, and downhole measurements, with only ~ 100 meters of spot coring planned. Scientists interested in structure and history of the inner accretionary prism and forearc basin, in situ stress conditions, as well as shallow-splay fault log response are encouraged to apply, especially those with expertise in log analysis, biostratigraphy, sedimentology, downhole testing, and mud gas analysis. Expedition 322, scheduled Aug. to early Sept. 2009, will investigate presubduction materials in the Shikoku Basin seaward of the Nankai Subduction system. The expedition plan, consisting of continuous riserless coring, downhole measurements, and wireline logging at the proposed input Site NT1-07, requires a full scientific party to conduct standard shipboard core and logging data analyses. Scientists interested in sediments, basement rocks, fluids, and microorganisms delivered to the Nankai subduction zone are encouraged to apply. A summary of the scientific objectives and operations for these two expeditions and overall NanTroSEIZE drilling is available at www.jamstec.go.jp/chikyu/eng/Expedition/index.html Applicants should apply through their respective IODP Program Member Office (see www.iodp.org/apply-to-sail) by Oct. 15, 2008. IODP Program Member Offices (PMOs) will forward applications of nominated scientists to the Center for Deep Earth Exploration (CDEX), which will staff these expeditions. CDEX will work with the co-chief scientists and PMOs to maximize the scientific output while balancing member country staffing quotas. For more information, visit www.iodp.org. ---------------------------------------- [Update] The latest issue of CDEX newsletter is now available online http://www.jamstec.go.jp/chikyu/eng/Library/index.html ---------------------------------------- The world's top scientists participated in the exciting Stage 1A of IODP NanTroSEIZE, which will continue for the next several years. NanTroSEIZE targets the Nankai Trough of the Kumano-nada coast off the Kii Peninsula, where large M8-class earthquakes have repeatedly occurred.
