Sand for Students Fieldwork #3 (Shizuoka, JPN)

The third Sand for Student fieldwork program was held in Shizuoka. Starting in September, 2007, the Chikyu will be carrying out scientific deep-sea drilling in the Nankai Trough in the Kumanonada area (off Kii Peninsula), a huge seismogenic and tsunamigenic zone that extends from Shizuoka through off Kii Peninsula, Shikoku, Kyushu and Ryukyu Islands to Taiwan Island. To support this Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) research, Sand for Students fieldwork will be carried out at the Fujigawa and Abekawa rivers, as potential sedimentary sources for the Kumanonada Nankai Trough.
