15 Oct. 2011: Mirai

Fine. Southeasterly (about 8m/s) prevailed. Cloud clusters, which moves westward, can be monitored in the north of Mirai. Cloud images taken by satellite shows zonally extended cloud band. Radiosonde sounding shows CAPE higher than 1000 J/kg, and total precipitable water vapor gradually increased over 45 mm.

Three-hourly routine measurements continue. Most of insturments properly work.

Photos - During the cruise, we hold seminars to learn about the observations conducted on-board. In addition, it is a good opportunity to know each other. Today a scientist from Univ. of Hawaii/IPRC made a presentation entitled "Ocean/Atmosphere interactions in the tropical Indian and Pacific Oceans". Actually, he started to show the basic features of the Indian Ocean, then report the current cruise results, and also showed some results obtained by previous Mirai cruises in the western Pacific with some numerical model studies. As for the observations, two scientists from IPRC are in charge of LADCP measurement, which is attached to CTD and has been conducted every 3 hours, to study ocean surface structure by a combination with MSP data.
