About the Usage of Facilities and Equipments

Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) is leasing our facilities and equipments to the users outside the agency for the purposes of contributing to the improvement of science and technology standard, and to the development of study and research. We are glad that we can help you use our facilities and equipment.

  1. Our Policies in Principle
    (1)
    Prospective Users: JAMSTEC has facilities and equipments, some of which have incomparably high performance and are very precious. We are leasing these facilities and equipments to the people outside the agency who are committed to the research and development about science and technology and to those who are prevailing and developing the results of study and research.
    (2)
    Fees: The outside users will be charged the usage fees based on the JAMSTEC's fee calculation rules (Usage Fee A), as well as overhead costs (30 percent of the total sum of the fees). Look at the "Table: Facilities and Equipments & Usage Fees." Users are responsible for the expenditure required for the use of leased facilities and equipments (such as personnel costs) and the payment for necessary consumables.
    (3)
    Fee Exemption: In case the facilities and equipments are used for the research and development of marine science and technology or study and research, and in case they are used for prevailing and developing marine science and technology, users can get the fee exemption.
    (4)
    Transportation: As a rule, users themselves or professional companies are responsible for the transporting and operating the leased facilities and equipments, provided that they guarantee safe transportation and operation. (The JAMSTEC staff members explain about the transportation methods and the operation as we did in the past.) When user needs the help of agency staff in regards to transportation and operation, a mutual contract must be closed about research and technical instruction between the agency and the user.
    (5)
    Perquisites for Supporting Organizations: The members of supporting organizations are entitled to get the fee exemption.
    (6)
    Priority: Concerning the use, JAMSTEC's staff members have priority over the outside users. The facilities and equipments can be lent when they are not used by the agency's staff members.
  2. Fee Exemption
    (1)
    Who can get the Fee Exemption In case the users borrow and use the facilities and equipments for the following purposes, and in case the users are admitted as contributing to the JAMSTEC's business accomplishments, they can get the fee exemption.

    a.
    The facilities and equipments are used for the research and development of science technology including marine science and technology or study and research.
    b.
    The facilities and equipments are used for the prevalence and enlightenment about the accomplishments about science and technology including marine science and technology.
    (2)
    The Usage Fees In case the facilities and equipments are used for the purposes as mentioned in 2 (1), the usage fee is only overhead costs (Usage Fee B).
    (3)
    Outside User's Responsibilities-- Reporting the Results The outside users who get the fee exemption must report the results they got by using JAMSTEC's facilities and equipments to the president of JAMSTEC as soon as possible.
