Status of JAMSTEC after "the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake"

March 23, 2011

You are fully aware that Japan was stricken by a gigantic earthquake with magnitude 9.0 and associated catastrophic tsunami on Friday, March 11, 2011. We should express our appreciation to warm words of condolence and, at the same time, extend our deepest sympathies to those who have been impacted.

As time passes, it is getting clearer that the event we encountered was one of the worst disasters we have experienced. Fortunately, it has not been reported so far that any JAMSTEC staffs became victims of the earthquake or tsunami. Also, none of our research facilities and research vessels was damaged except damage on some parts of the scientific drilling vessel: Chikyu. In addition, the accident of the nuclear power-generating plants is not substantially affecting the activities of JAMSTEC.

All of JAMSTEC staff do utmost to overcome this unprecedented disaster as early as possible. At the same time, although the disaster slightly affected our research activities such as those carried out by using the Earth Simulator, we will keep making our efforts to advance marine and earth sciences and related technology by making good use of valuable knowledge obtained through the experience of this disaster.

Yasuhiro Kato
President
