The Japan Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) (http://www.jamstec.go.jp/jamstec-e/index-e.html)
JAMSTEC(former The Japan Marine Science and Technology Center), was established in 1971, organized as an independent administrative institution on 1st April 2004. In order to understand the Earth including the ocean as integrated system and to elucidate the mechanism of global change, JAMSTEC carries out various research and development such as observational research, prediction research and technological development. JAMSTEC owns and operates the world's leading facilities including the supercomputer "Earth Simulator", the deep-sea drilling vessel "Chikyu", the manned research submersible "Shinkai 6500", the autonomous underwater vehicle "Urashima".

The Building Research Institute (BRI) (http://www.kenken.go.jp/english/index.html)
BRI, ever since its establishment, as the only one national research institute concerning buildings, houses and cities, produced a multitude of positive outcomes through research and development, providing technical guidance including response to natural disaster and training of international earthquake engineering. On April 1, 2001, it reorganizes its structure to one of Incorporated Administrative Agency. By March 2006, during the first mid term targeted period, it carried out research and development focused on subjects with high social needs collaborating with other institutes, and made achievements in the subjects of high interest to the public such as measures for the sick house syndrome, earthquake protection of wooden buildings and the heat island phenomenon.

Earth Simulator(http://www.jamstec.go.jp/esc/esc/eng/index.html)
The supercomputer developed by National Space Development Agency of Japan, Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute and The Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (names at the point of development), which can create a virtual Earth and simulate atmosphere, ocean and solid earth in high speed and high accuracy. It is developed and used for the forecast / elucidation of the medium- and long-term environmental changes and natural disaster. It is also used in the fields of advanced technology such as biotechnology and nanotechnology.
