JAMSTEC to Hold Public Symposium on Earth's Evolution and Dynamics
"Changes on our Planet – Findings from the Research Frontier"

The Institute for Research on Earth Evolution (IFREE), JAMSTEC, will hold the first public symposium on the Earth's evolution, dynamics and change on Saturday, January 14, 2012.

In the wake of the massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11, understanding of highly hazardous geologic events on Earth, such as large subduction earthquakes, tsunamis and marine volcanic eruptions, is a pressing need to strengthen the nation's disaster prevention and mitigation measures. IFREE is a research division dedicated to address these challenges by focusing two research themes, "Researches on Dynamics along Plate Subduction Zones" and "Researches on evolution of the oceanic crust and the mantle".

In the symposium, researchers will share findings obtained from studies on the March earthquake, and provide insights into what they would offer in understanding the generation and mechanism of megathrust earthquakes around Japan, including the possible seismic linkage along the Nakai trough. The topics will also include dynamic crustal changes in the Earth's interior responsible for disastrous geologic events, the glimpse of which have been revealed by the scientific ocean drilling by the Chikyu and deep-sea submersible surveys.
