Job Description We are soliciting applications for a Project Researcher or a Project Technical Scientist to engage in the research on "Research for Carbon Cycle, Climate Sensitivity, Tipping Elements in the Earth's Clilmate System, and Others", one of the sub-themes of the"Integrated Research Program for Advancing Climate Models (TOGO) (FY2017-2021)", which is supported by the Ministry of Education, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Japan.

The successful applicant is expected to conduct the following research activities and to have skils in FORTRAN, UNIX shell scripts, and common visualization softwares for the activities and to process data in formats which are widely used in climate sciences (e.g., HDF and NetCDF).

Studies on the dynamics of climate forcing agents other than carbon dioxide, such as methane and aerosols, and their impact on global warming caused by anthropogenic emission of carbon dioxide; evaluation of the impacts of phenomena occurring in the stratosphere on global warming projection (including evaluation of impacts of so-called geoengineering, or artificial climate control as a measure against global warming, such as aerosol scattering to the stratosphere).

Job Type Project Scientist: To contribute to the Program, a Project Scientist should be able to perform world-leading research as an independent scientist and share the results through scientific publications.

Project Technical Scientist: To contribute to the Program, a Project Technical Scientist is expected to take a leading role in research, technology development, and technology innovation.

*There may be a change in affiliation in the case of reorganization of the Agency.
*At the time of appointoment, the position (Project Scientist or Project Technical Scientist) will be determined in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws.
Requirements Project Scientist: The successful applicant must have a Ph.D. and a strong record in a closely related research field.

Project Technical Scientist: The successful applicant must have a Ph.D. and a strong record in a closely related research and development field.

Working Conditions & Contract Period (1) Number of positions:
1 position for a Project Scientist or a Project Technical Scientist

(2) Type of contract:
Fixed-term employee

(3) Working Hours:
Discretionary labor system

(4) Contract Period:
Period of employment is from April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019.

*Appointment date is negotiable.
*One contract period is a maximum of 1 fiscal year.
*Contract period can be renewed but the total contract period is a maximum of 4 fiscal years (until March 31, 2022) depending on the progress of this research project.
*The contract period mentioned above will change according to budget of this project.

*In accordance with JAMSTEC’s bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change. 
*This position is a non-tenure-track, fixed-term employee position.  
Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
e.g. JPY 6,000,000
*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, with consideration of the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*There is no bonus or retirement allowance.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, successful applicants will receive relocation allowances in accordance with the JAMSTEC's bylaws.
(2) An allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) The employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) The JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) A housing lease service is available in accordance with JAMSTEC’s bylaws.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.
Application Procedure 1) Required documents
a) A CV (1 copy). Valid email and home addresses must be provided.
b) A summary of your research (1 copy, A4 size, 1 page).
c) Your research plan in JAMSTEC (1 copy, A4 size, 1 page).
d) Publication (achievement) list including thesis titles (1 copy).
*Please list publications in refereed (peer-reviewed) journals separately from unrefereed publications (1 copy).
e) A list of competitive research funds awarded to the applicant (1 copy).
f) 2 (or fewer) representative publications (1 copy).
g) 2 letters of recommendation from 2 senior research scientists (1 letter from each). The person providing the recommendation should send the letter directly to JAMSTEC by POST. The applicant's name should be written on the envelope. Letters of recommendation written by a JAMSTEC employee or JAMSTEC Visiting Scientist will not be accepted.

(2) Submission:
The required documents must be sent by POST and should reach JAMSTEC on or before the closing date. Documents in electronic format will NOT be accepted.

(3) Interview and appointment
Applicants will be selected based on submitted application material, followed by an interview. Currently, interviews are scheduled after late January, 2018. The successful applicant is expected to join us on April 1, 2018.
*A travel allowance is available for applicants from abroad, but only under certain circumstances.
