| Job Description | Institute of Biogeosciences, We are seeking for Scientist or employee engaged in research development as follows; For details of each programs, please visit our institute's website at http://www.jamstec.go.jp/biogeos/e/ (Relevant field) Isolation and application of previously uncultured microorganisms from deep-sea and deep-sea floor environments Exploration of useful functions from microorganism in deep-sea and deep-sea floor environments Exploration, cultivation and characterization of microorganisms and organisms in deep-sea and deep subsurface environments Exploration and applied research of microbial resources and soft matters from deep-sea and deep subsurface environments Ecological and environmental microbiology and biology in extremobiosphere such as deep-sea and deep subsurface ecosystems Exploration and detection technology of boundary biosphere and ecosystem in deep-sea and deep subsurface environments Omics and bioinformatics research for biospheres and ecosystems in deep-sea and deep subsurface environments Biogeochemical and geobiological research on energy and materials cycles in deep-sea and deep subsurface environments Ecology and physiology of protozoa in deep-sea and deep-sea floor environments Material circulation in deep-sea and deep subsurface environments Reconstruction of paleoclimate with sedimentary record Ecological and environmental research in aquatic environments Biogeochemical research in deep-sea environments Scientist: For the contribution to the Agency, Scientist are expected to have world-leading performance ability to accomplish research as an independent scientist. Research Scientist: For the contribution to the Agency, Research Scientists are expected to perform centering on research development, technology development, and innovation in technology etc. Postdoctoral Researcher: For the contribution to the Agency, the applicant should be able to demonstrate ability in conducting independent and imaginative research. *There may be change in affiliation in case of reorganization in the Agency. |
| Requirements | Scientist : Applicants must have a Ph.D. in closely related field. Expected to achieve outstanding research results.
Research Scientist: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in closely related field, or equivalent with extensive experience acceptable. Expected to achieve outstanding technological development and innovation. Postdoctoral Researcher : Applicant is required to hold a Ph.D. degree in related field within five years prior to the date of employment, or expected to obtain a Ph.D. degree in related field by the date of employment. *Relevant research fields Applied Microbiology, Applied genomics, Genetic engineering, Protein engineering, Environmental microbiology, Microbial ecology, Geobiology, Marine ecology, Bioinformatics, Microbial physiology, Biochemistry, Soft matter research, Physical chemistry, Bioengineering, Molecular ecology, Biogeochemistry, Environmental chemistry, Astrobiology, Life and biosphere search and detection, Geology, Geochemistry, Paleontology, Ecology *Any nationality, any gender, and any age could be applied. *JAMSTEC has the principle of equality of men and women as it relates to the recruitment of all staff. |

| Contract Period | Scientist : Period of employment is from April 1st, 2013 to March 31, 2018 (maximum five fiscal years) . A screening to be promoted to Senior Scientist (The total contract term is maximum ten fiscal years) is conducted before the contract expires . Senior Scientist : Period of employment is from April 1st, 2013 to March 31, 2018 and the contract can be renewed once (The total contract term is maximum ten fiscal years). Research Scientist : Period of employment is from April 1st, 2013 to March 31, 2016 (maximum three fiscal years) and the contract can be renewed once (The total contract term is maximum six fiscal years). Postdoctoral Researcher : Period of employment is from April 1st, 2013 to March 31, 2014 (one fiscal years) and the contract can be renewed twice (The total contract term is maximum three fiscal years). |
| Salary | Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, by considering academic career, research ability and research role in BioGeos (annual salary system). Appointment level for positions will be determined by JAMSTEC after the interview based upon the discussion with the successful candidates. e.g. Annual salary |
| Terms of Employment | 1) On appointment, relocation fee will be provided in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws. 2) The participant and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for insurance and labor insurance according to the current statutory proportion. 3) Housing lease service available. (not available to Postdoctoral Researcher) 4) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided. 5) Holidays and vacations: Saturday, Sunday, public holidays, year-end and beginning of the year are holidays. There are annual vacations with pay, special vacations, and leave of absence for care and maternity leave. 6) Other: There are various kinds of subsidies available for personal interests/welfare provided by JAMSTEC's employees' cooperative. |

(1)Required documents: Scientist/ Research Scientist/ Postdoctoral Researcher a) One copy of research proposal including the research program which you had been engaged in. (A4 size, 1page) b) One copy of research proposal including the research program which you desire to participate in. (A4 size, 1 page) c) Two reference (recommendation) letters written by a senior research scientist, which should be sent directly from them by POST. Applicant's name should be written on the envelope. Reference letter written by JAMSTEC employee or Visiting Scientist cannot be accepted. *Postdoctoral Researcher: one reference(recommendation) letter required. d) One copy of a resume. (a valid email address is essential) *Please specify which position you apply , "Scientist/ Research Scientist/ Postdoctoral Researcher". e) One copy of publication list including thesis titles. Please separate those with referred journals from other publications. f) Copies of two (or less) representative publications. g) One copy of a list for competitive research fund from some kind of research institution in Japan, if any. (Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research, any funded research from Japan Science and Technology Agency, etc) (2) Submission Required documents must be sent by POST and should reach JAMSTEC before/on the closing date.
