| Job Description | BioGeos conducts researches on biosphere in the deep sea and the extreme environment. We are recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to engage in the researches below. For details of each research, please visit our website. <Engineering research field using extremophilic organisms from the deep sea and deep-sea floor environments> <Engineering research field in extreme environments in deep-sea and deep subsurface environments> *The objective of hiring Postdoctoral Researchers at JAMSTEC is to let them conduct the research independently which is authorized by JAMSTEC under directions of leaders and also to let them improve their research qualities. *There may be change in affiliation in case of reorganization in the Agency. |
| Requirements | Applicant is required to hold a Ph.D. degree in related field within five years prior to the date of employment, or expected to obtain a Ph.D. degree in related field by the date of employment. *Relevant research fields: Microbiology, Applied Microbiology, Biochemistry, Natural Product Chemistry, Bioengineering, Biotechnology, Chemical Biology, Biophysics, Biomimetics, Materials Science, Physical Chemistry, Applied Physics, Soft Matter, Nanotechnology *Strong communication skills suitable for a highly multidisciplinary work environment. *Any nationality, any gender could be applied. *JAMSTEC has the principle of equality of men and women as it relates to the recruitment of all staff. |

| Working Condition and Contract Period | 1) Number of posts for the position: 1 Postdoctoral Researcher 2) Type of contract: Fixed term employee 3) Working hours: Discretionary labor system 4) Period of employment is from September 1st, 2013 to March 31st, 2014. *Appointment date is negotiable. *One contract period is maximum one Japanese fiscal year, and the contract is renewable depending on the progress of research and the performance evaluation up to three fiscal years (until March 31st, 2016). |
| Salary | Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, by considering academic career, research ability and research role in BioGeos (annual salary system). Appointment level for the position will be determined by JAMSTEC after the interview based upon the discussion with the successful candidates. The expected salary will be JPY 5,000,000. *No bonus/retirement allowance provided. |
| Terms of Employment | 1) On appointment, relocation fee will be provided in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws. 2) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided. 3) The participant and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for insurance and labor insurance according to the current statutory proportion. 4) Housing lease service is not available. 5) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end and New Year holidays. There are annual vacations with pay, special vacations, and care and maternity leave. 6) Other: There are various kinds of subsidies available for personal interests/welfare provided by JAMSTEC's employees' cooperative. |
| Application Procedure | (1) Required documents: a) One copy of CV (a valid email address is essential.) *Please specify that you are applying to "Postdoctoral Researcher" position. b) One copy of a summary of research the applicant has been carried out.(A4 size, 1page) c) One copy of your research plan in BioGeos of JAMSTEC. (A4 size, 1page) d) One copy of publication (achievement) list including thesis titles. *Please list publications in refereed journals separately from others. e) Copies of two (or less) representative publications. f) One recommendation letter written by a senior research scientist which should be sent directly to JAMSTEC from the recommender by POST. *Applicant's name should be written on the envelope. *Recommendation letter written by JAMSTEC employee or Visiting Scientist cannot be accepted. g) One copy of a list of competitive research funds awarded. (2) Submission Required documents must be sent by POST and reach to JAMSTEC before/on the closing date. Electric form will NOT be accepted. *Please write "PERSONNEL, BioGeos Postdoctoral Researcher" (in red) on the front of the envelope. Registered mail is recommended for confirming the receipt of your application (no acknowledgement will be provided). (3) Interview and Appointment Candidates will be selected based on submitted application material, followed by an interview currently scheduled in in early July, 2013. The successful candidate is expected to join us from September 1st, 2013. The transportation fee is payable to candidates from abroad, but only under specific situations. |
