Department
Ocean Floor Observatory Technology Development Group, Research and Development (R&D) Center for Earthquake and Tsunami (CEAT)
Job Description The Ocean Floor Observatory Technology Development Group, Research and Development (R&D) Center for Earthquake and Tsunami (CEAT), JAMSTEC is soliciting applications for two Postdoctoral Researcher positions in a research project entitled "Subduction Zone Observation and Monitoring for Hazard Mitigation" which is an integrated seismogenic zone research project through seismic surveys, seafloor observations, and monitoring earthquakes and tsunamis.

Please refer to our website for details about the Research and Development Center for Earthquake and Tsunami and our research plan.

[Research Description]
Research and technical development to establish real-time continuous monitoring of seafloor deformation in the seafloor and seafloor borehole environment, mainly targeting the Nankai Trough seismogenic zone in Japan, as well as scientific analysis of seafloor observation data on crustal deformation.

[Job Specification]
Observation of earthquake and crustal deformation in the seafloor is crucial in discovering and understanding processes and their mechanisms in subducting oceanic plate, such as large Tsunamigenic earthquakes, slow earthquakes, and slow slip events.

We, the Ocean Floor Observatory Technology Development Group, R&D Center for Earthquake and Tsunami, JAMSTEC is the central research group in cutting edge technology development for earthquake and crustal deformation observation in the seafloor.
Our current research activity includes developing scientific sensor system to monitor tilt and strain in the seafloor and in deep seafloor boreholes drilled by the scientific drilling vessel "Chikyu". We also deploy and perform long-term observation with the newly developed observation systems in the Nankai Trough, Japan seafloor where large Tsunamigenic earthquake anticipated in near future, as a part of JAMSTEC'S overarching research project entitled "Subduction Zone Observation and Monitoring for Hazard Mitigation".

Successful applicants will engage in the development of scientific instruments for seafloor deformation monitoring. More specifically, they will have a role in the planning, implementation, and data analysis in the system development in land and seafloor test facilities. The test facilities include JAMSTEC's seismic vault in Kamioka-mine, Gifu, Japan, and seafloor cabled borehole observatory sites in the Nankai Trough. They may also conduct seismological and geophysical research using seafloor data from leading-edge seafloor observation systems, Dense Ocean-Floor Network systems for Earthquake and Tsunamis (DONET), and seafloor borehole observatories in the Nankai Trough, Japan, as well as the very new scientific instruments which we develop and install.

[Relevant Research Fields]
Seismology, geophysics, and optical measurement.
Job Type Postdoctoral Researcher: To contribute to the project, a Postdoctoral Researcher should be able to independently conduct the research subject which is authorized by the Project under direction of a leader, and to be appointed to improve his/her research qualities.
