Job Description The Department of Environmental Geochemical Cycle Research is soliciting applicants for the position of Project Engineer. This individual will be engaged in supporting a research project that is part of the Environment Research and Technology Development Fund of the Ministry of the Environment (MOE). The research theme is a sub-project of the "Evaluation of the spatiotemporal patterns of the terrestrial carbon budget based on integrated terrestrial observation data" project under "Integrated carbon observation and analysis system for early detection of carbon cycle change globally and in the Asia-Pacific region" (FY26-FY28, Principal Investigator: Kazuhito Ichii)

The main tasks of this position include collecting and organizing various satellite data, climate data and model outputs, performing statistical and integrated analysis of these data, and running a terrestrial carbon cycle model.

Project Engineer: To contribute to the Project, a Project Engineer is expected to manage, improve and advance the infrastructure. Establishment of technology based on a background of general technical knowledge such as information system, improvement of technical management functions is also inclusive.

Requirements The successful applicant must have a bachelor's degree in a related field. Those with equivalent ability with extensive experience are also acceptable.

The successful applicant will process the satellite data and set up terrestrial carbon cycle models using C, MATLAB, shell script or ENVI on a UNIX system. Therefore, high computer programming skill is a must.
Moderate skill or fluency in English is required.
Experience in research and development using terrestrial ecosystem models is preferred.

Working Conditions & Contract Period (1) Number of positions:

9:00-17:30 (Lunch hours 12:15-13:00)

(4)Contract Period
Period of employment is from April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016.

1 contract period is a maximum of 1 fiscal year. The contract period can be renewed but the total contract period is a maximum of 2 fiscal years (until March 31, 2017) depending on the progress of the research project "Evaluation of the spatiotemporal patterns of the terrestrial carbon budget based on integrated terrestrial observation data" under "Integrated carbon observation and analysis system for early detection of carbon cycle change globally and in the Asia-Pacific region" supported by MOE.

*Appointment date is negotiable.
*The contract period mentioned above will change according to budget of this project.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during the employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.    
Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
e.g. JPY 4,300,000-5,500,000

*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, with consideration of the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*Overtime payment will be added to monthly salary.
*There is no bonus or retirement allowance.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful applicant will receive a relocation allowance in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws.
(2) An allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) The employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) Various subsidies are provided from the JAMSTEC employee cooperative for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) A housing lease service is available in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.

(3) Interview and appointment
Applicants will be selected based on submitted application material, followed by an interview. Currently, interviews are scheduled in January, 2015.
The successful applicant is expected to join us on April 1, 2015.

*A travel allowance is available for applicants from abroad, but only under certain circumstances.
