Job Description We are soliciting applications for a Scientist/Technical Scientist/ or postdoctoral researcher who will engage in the following research and development subjects:

The successful applicant will use advanced modeling techniques to conduct R&D to analyze physico-biogeochemical processes of atmospheric trace chemical species causing climate change and global changes in the environment. The applicant will explore interactions between human activities and Earth surface system to provide scientific evidence to guide mitigation policies (e.g., those on emissions reduction), in consideration of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports and sustainable development goals (SDGs). For example, suitable proposals might use supercomputers to integrate advanced satellite observations into numerical model simulations or to develop data assimilation methods. Other types of proposals employing different approaches are also welcome if relevant to the topic. The successful applicant will be expected to collaborate with observational scientists studying short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) and other compounds in the EGCR/ESS group or elsewhere in the Japan Agency for Marine–Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), to elucidate processes of biogeochemical cycles across the Earth’s subsystems (e.g., atmosphere, land, and ocean).

Job Type Scientist: To contribute to the Agency, a Scientist is expected to perform world-leading research independently and share the results through scientific publications.

Technical Scientist: To contribute to the Agency, a Technical Scientist is expected to take a leading role in research, technology development, and technology innovation.

Postdoctoral Researcher: To contribute to the Agency, a Postdoctoral Researcher should be able to independently conduct the research subject under direction of a leader, and to be appointed to improve his/her research qualities.

*There may be a change in affiliation in the event of reorganization of the Agency.
*At the time of appointment, the Job Type will be determined in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws.
Requirements Scientist: The successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. and have a strong enough record to be a scientist in a closely related research field.

Technical Scientist: The successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. and have a strong enough record to be a technical scientist in a closely related research field.

Postdoctoral Researcher: Applicants are required to have been awarded or expect to have obtained a Ph.D. in a related field by the date of employment. In addition, no more than 5 years can have passed between the last day of the fiscal year in which the applicants obtained a Ph.D. and the date of employment.

(4) Contract Period
*Appointment date is negotiable.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.

Scientist/Technical Scientist:
Period of employment is from August 1, 2019 to March 31, 2024.
*One contract period is a maximum of five fiscal years. The contract period will not be renewed.
*After undergoing an evaluation during the period of employment, the contract may be modified to one without termination (termination of employment would be at the end of the fiscal year in which the employee reaches the age of 60, or the age of 65 if the employee is rehired after his/her retirement). For details on this system, please contact Human Resources Division.

Postdoctoral Researcher:
August 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020.
*One contract period is maximum one fiscal year.
*The contract period can be renewed but the total contract period is a maximum three fiscal years (until March 31, 2022).
*This position is a non-tenure-track, fixed-term employee position.
Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)

Scientist/Technical Scientist:
e.g., JPY 6,000,000
*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaw, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*There is no bonus or retirement allowance.

Postdoctoral Researcher:
JPY 5,250,000
*There is no raise, bonus, or retirement allowance.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful applicant will receive a relocation allowance in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws.
(2) An allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) The employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by the current statute.
(4) The JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) A housing lease service is available in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws. In the case of Postdoctoral Researcher, a housing lease service is not available.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.

d) Publication (achievement) list including thesis titles (1 copy)
*Please list publications in refereed (peer-reviewed) journals separately from unrefereed publications (1 copy).
e) A list of competitive research funds awarded to the applicant (1 copy)
*If you have not been awarded any, include "none" in the list.
f) 2 (or fewer) representative publications (1 copy).
g) 2 letters of recommendation from two senior research scientists (1 letter from each). The person providing the recommendation should send the letter to JAMSTEC directly by POST or E-mail. In the case of E-mail, a signed letter in PDF format should be attached. The applicant’s name should be specified on the envelope or in the title of the E-mail. Letters of recommendation written by a JAMSTEC employee or a JAMSTEC visiting scientist will not be accepted.

Postdoctoral Researcher:

(3) Interview and appointment
Applicants will be selected based on submitted application materials, followed by an interview. The successful applicant is expected to join us on August 1, 2019.

*A travel allowance is available for applicants from abroad, but only under certain circumstances.
*Web-based online interviews by ZOOM are also available.
