Job Description Arctic Ocean and Climate System Research Unit, Institute of Arctic Climate and Environment Research (IACE), JAMSTEC is soliciting applications for a permanent employee position as a Principal Scientist or Principal Technical Scientist. The successful applicant will be engaged in the medium-term plan.

[Research Description]
The Arctic Ocean and Climate System Research Unit, Institute of Arctic Climate and Environment Research (IACE), conducts research that examines environmental changes in the Arctic Ocean, which are mainly caused by the rapid, drastic reduction in sea ice, and their impact on climate and ecosystems, by making observations in the Arctic Ocean, analyzing data, conducting numerical modeling, and using other scientific methods. Based on the results of this research, the research unit contributes to knowledge on several issues regarding the Arctic from a scientific perspective.
We are recruiting a Principal Scientist or Principal Research Scientist to conduct proactive Arctic Ocean research, with a view to understanding on-going environmental changes and their impact on climate and ecosystems.

[Job Specification]
・The successful applicant will lead research and development on the Arctic Ocean at JAMSTEC, mainly from an observational perspective, and conduct comprehensive research activities to increase our understanding of environmental changes in the Arctic Ocean, which are mainly caused by the rapid, drastic reduction in sea ice, and their impact on climate and ecosystems, and publish the results.
・The successful applicant should promote international collaboration for Arctic Ocean research and lead international activities involving Arctic Ocean observations.
・The successful applicant should undertake the required proactive activities to contribute to national and international initiatives affecting the Arctic, such as participating in meetings/symposiums involving the working group of the Arctic Council, within an international scientific framework.
・The successful applicant will be able to conduct any form of Arctic Ocean research at JAMSTEC at his/her own initiative.
・The successful applicant should show leadership in promoting collaborative Arctic Ocean research with various scientists within an international framework.

Job Type (The following description (1) and (2) provide position name and definition for the role for which we are currently recruiting.)

Scientist: To contribute to the Agency, a Scientist should be able to perform world-leading research independently and share the results through scientific publications.
(1) Principal Scientist: A Principal Scientist is expected to achieve world-leading research results as a research expert representing JAMSTEC, and to improve quality and efficiency of JAMSTEC’s research results (Buildup of information and cultivation of human resources included). In addition, A Principal Scientist is also expected to support and cooperate with external affiliated organizations actively, and provide appropriate advice and recommendation over a decision-making on JAMSTEC’s management that requires advanced expertise.

Technical Scientist: To contribute to the Agency, a Technical Scientist is expected to take a leading role in research, technology development, and technology innovation.
(2) Principal Technical Scientist: A Principal Technical Scientist is expected to achieve world-leading innovative research and technology development results as a research and development expert representing JAMSTEC, and to improve quality and efficiency of JAMSTEC’s research and development results as well as technological achievements (Buildup of information and cultivation of human resources included). In addition, a Principal Technical Scientist is also expected to support and cooperate with external affiliated organizations actively, and provide appropriate advice and recommendation over a decision-making on JAMSTEC’s management that requires advanced expertise.

*There may be a change in affiliation in the case of reorganization of the Agency.
*At the time of appointment, the Job Type (Principal Scientist or Principal Technical Scientist) will be determined in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws.
Requirements Principal Scientist:
The successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. and have a strong enough record to be a principal scientist in a closely related research field.

Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
e.g., up to JPY 13,500,000

*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*There is no bonus or retirement allowance.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful applicant will receive a relocation allowance in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws.
(2) An allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) The employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) The JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) A housing lease service is available in accordance with JAMSTEC’s bylaws.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.

b) A summary of your research (1 copy, A4 size, 2 pages)
c) Your research plan at JAMSTEC (1 copy, A4 size, 1 page)
d) A list of publications and achievements including thesis titles(1 copy).
*Please list publications in refereed (peer-reviewed) journals separately from unrefereed publications and other achievements.
*Please mark outstanding achievements (5 to 10).
e) A list of competitive research funds awarded to the applicant (1 copy).
*If you have not been awarded any, include none in the list.
f) 5 (or fewer) representative publications (1 copy).
g) 3 letters of recommendation from 3 principal research scientists (1 letter from each). 1 out of 3 letters should be written by a principal research scientist belonging a non-Japanese institution or university. The person providing the recommendation should send the letter directly to JAMSTEC by POST. The applicant’s name should be written on the envelope. Letters of recommendation written by a JAMSTEC employee or JAMSTEC Visiting Scientist will not be accepted.

(2) Submission:
The required documents must be sent by POST and should reach JAMSTEC on or before the closing date. Documents in electronic format will NOT be accepted.

(3) Interview and appointment
Applicants will be selected based on submitted application material, followed by an interview. Currently, the first round of interviews are scheduled in January, 2018 and the second round interviews are in January, too. The successful applicant is expected to join us on April 1, 2018.

*A travel allowance is available for applicants from abroad, but only under certain circumstances.
