Climate Variations Research Laboratory Unit, Application Laboratory
Recruitement for a Scientist and Post-doctoral Researcher

Available Position & Research Topics Application Laboratory (APL) at JAMSTEC is a newly established unique program aiming at the creation of socio-climatic innovative activities which would be done by mutual intercommunication of climate variability prediction sciences with its various applications in our society. We are now developing our activities in line with the above-mentioned goal with Climate Variation Predictability and Applicability Research Program to bring cutting-edge achievements in basic climate science to its applications. As a part of our new initiatives with African Centre for Climate and Earth System Science (ACCESS), we are going to initiate collaborative research activities in which one of the key themes is the development of early warning systems for the management of agricultural, health and water resources in South Africa. A hierarchy of advanced climate prediction models (such as SINTEX-F coupled GCM) will be used in this development. The project is funded by Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS), which is jointly supported by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST)) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to promote international joint researches on global issues with developing countries.

Applications are invited for the following positions and topics:

(1) Scientist: Climate analysis to understand predictability of Subtropical Dipole Mode (SDM) in southern Indian and Atlantic Oceans.
(2) Postdoctroal Researcher: Coupled GCM developments and predictability studies.
(3) Postdoctroal Researcher: Dynamical downscalling of climate data and GCM outputs.
Requirements At the time of appointment, successful candidates should have Ph.D. degree(s) in climate science or related fields such as oceanography and atmospheric science. For position (2)&(3), applicants must be within five years since awarded a Ph.D. at the time of appointment. It is essential that candidates have advanced knowledge and skills (using software such as GrADS, Ferret, FORTRAN etc) in analyzing large amount of observational and model output data.

For position (1) , candidate should have good skill in climate analysis including analysis and treatment of large amount of GCM outputs. Knowledge in subtropical oceanic and atmospheric variations is preferred.

For position (2) , Candidate should have working experience of global general circulation models. Preferences will be given to candidates who have working knowledge in coupled GCM, initializations of coupled GCMs, predictability of intra-seasonal oscillations and dynamical prediction systems. Successful candidate will directly work on SINTEX-F coupled GCM, development for ISO and subtropical dipole predictions. Preference will be given to candidates who already have work experience using SINTEX-F.

For position (3) , Candidate should have experience in working with regional atmosphere/climate models (such as WRF). Successful candidate is expected to work on regional climate models to downscale climate predictions over southern Africa.

Any nationality, any sex, and any age could apply. JAMSTEC has the principle of equality of men and women as it relates to the recruitment of all staff.
