Job Description The Department of Mathematical Science and Advanced Technology (MAT) at JAMSTEC provides a nurturing environment for development work with applications to both software and research relating to social and scientific issues that fall within the remit of the priority project "Cross-Ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP) (Project period: FY2018-FY2022)" funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and for building innovative survey technology for enhancing the performance of deep-sea resources. We invite Project Scientists, Project Technical Scientists and Project Engineers with sufficient work experience to apply for these positions. Applicants should be interested in developing numerical models to optimize systems for mining and rifting mud from the seafloor.

The project is divided into the following specific tasks:
1) Development of the numerical model for evaluating the slurry transportation system based on a riser pipe.
2) Development of the numerical model to optimize the dredge head used to mine the seafloor.
3) Validation of the model with an ocean and laboratory based experiments conducted by other SIP members.

Job Type Project Scientist:
To contribute to the project, a Project Scientist is expected to perform world-leading research independently and share the results through scientific publications.

Project Technical Scientist:
To contribute to the project, a Project Technical Scientist is expected to take a leading role in research, technology development, and technology innovation.

Project Engineer:
To contribute to the project, a Project Engineer is expected to manage, improve and advance the infrastructure. Establishment of technology based on a background of general technical knowledge such as information system, improvement of technical management functions is also inclusive.

*There may be a change in affiliation if the Agency is reorganized.
*At the time of appointment, the job type (Project Scientist or Project Technical Scientist) will be determined in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws.
Requirements Project Scientist:
The successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. and have a strong enough record to be a scientist in a closely related research field.

Project Technical Scientist:
The successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. and have a strong enough record to be a technical scientist in a closely related research field.

Project Engineer:
The successful applicant must have a bachelor's degree in a closely related field. Those who have equivalent ability with extensive experience are also acceptable.

Project Engineer: 9:00-17:30 (Lunch hours 12:15-13:00)

(4) Contract Period
January 1, 2019 to March 31, 2019. (Annual renewal up to 5 fiscal years)

*Appointment date is negotiable.
*One contract period is a maximum of 1 fiscal year. The contract period can be expected to be renewed annually but the total contract period is for a maximum of 5 fiscal years (until March 31, 2023), depending on the progress of this research project and the performance of the employee.
*The contract period mentioned above will change according to the budget of this project.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during the employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*This position is a non-tenure-track, fixed-term employee position.
Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12, equal monthly payments)
Project Scientist/ Project Technical Scientist:
e.g., JPY 6,000,000
*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*There are no bonus and retirement allowance.

Project Technical Engineer:
e.g., JPY 3,300,000 ~ 6,600,000
*Overtime payment will be added to monthly salary.
*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*There are no bonus and retirement allowance.
Terms of Employment 1) Upon appointment, the successful applicant will receive a relocation allowance in accordance with the bylaws of JAMSTEC.
(2) An allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) The employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by the current statute.
(4) The JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) A housing lease service is available in accordance with the bylaws of JAMSTEC.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.

c) Your research plan at JAMSTEC (1 copy, A4 size, 1 page)
d) Publications (achievements) list including thesis titles (1 copy)
*Please list publications in refereed (peer-reviewed) journals separately from unrefereed publications (1 copy).
e) A list of competitive research funds awarded to the applicant (1 copy).
*If you have not been awarded any, include "none" in the list.
f) 2 representative publications (1 copy).
g) 2 letters of recommendation from two senior research scientists (1 letter from each). The person providing the recommendation should send the letter to JAMSTEC directly by POST or E-mail. In the case of E-mail, a signed letter in PDF format should be attached. The applicant’s name should be specified on the envelope or in the title of the E-mail. Letters of recommendation written by a JAMSTEC employee or a JAMSTEC visiting scientist will not be accepted.

Project Engineer:
a) A CV (1 copy). Valid E-mail and home addresses must be provided. Also include details about your professional experiences as well as your research and development record in the CV.

(2) Submission:
The required documents must be sent by POST or E-mail and should reach JAMSTEC on or before the closing date.

(3) Interview and appointment
Applicants will be selected based on submitted application material, followed by an interview. Currently, interviews are scheduled in November or December, 2018. The successful applicant is expected to join us on January 1, 2019.

*A travel allowance is available for applicants from abroad, but only under certain circumstances.
