FY2018 [Research and Development (R&D) Center for Global Change, Environmental Geochemical Cycle Research Group]
Recruitment of Postdoctoral Researcher A

Available Position JAMSTEC is recruiting a total of 1 position as a Postdoctoral Researcher.
Environmental Geochemical Cycle Research Group, Research and Development Center for Global Change (RCGC)
Job Description We are soliciting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position focusing on a project entitled "Origins and ice-nucleating ability of bioaerosols (*) in the marine atmosphere: Probing the link among ecosystems, chemical substances, and clouds with fluorescence properties (FY2018-2020, Principal Investigator: Yugo Kanaya)". The project is funded by JSPS as Kakenhi.

[Job Specification]
This research will involve characterization of spatio-temporal variations in atmospheric bioaerosol particles in the marine atmosphere based on field observations to better understand their origin (e.g., marine ecosystems) and/or to probe the link to cloud properties through ice nucleation. The successful candidate will cover one or more of the topic areas listed below, while other related research initiatives could also be proposed when suitable for the project (**).

Topic areas:
1) Improved detection of bioaerosols by comparing autofluorescence (online) and stained fluorescence (offline) techniques or expansion of measurable size range, etc.
2) Statistical analyses of spatio-temporal variations in bioaerosols observed from past and new deployments on research vessels and/or remote islands.
3) Exploration of key tracers from surface marine ecosystems suitable for estimating the emission rates of bioaerosols within sea spray aerosol particles.
4) Various analyses to best relate bioaerosols and ice-nucleating particles in terms of atmospheric concentrations and properties.

(*) Airborne particles (either dead or alive) that are derived from living organisms, including microorganisms and fragments of any living thing.
(**) To support interdisciplinary research, joint activities will be planned with (or support/advice will be available from) co-investigators from JAMSTEC specializing in atmospheric aerosol measurements and the analysis of marine chemicals/microorganisms. Observational data of atmospheric fluorescent particles taken with a WIBS-4 instrument on past cruises of R/V Mirai are available for analysis. Ice nuclei measurements and numerical simulations (atmospheric chemical transport model and radiative transfer model) are planned by co-investigators at the National Institute of Polar Research and JAMSTEC, with whom collaboration is also possible.

[Related research fields]
Environmental Science (e.g., Biogeochemistry, Atmospheric Environment), Material Science/Chemistry (e.g., Marine Chemistry, Atmospheric Chemistry, Geochemistry, Spectroscopy), Ecosystems (Marine Ecosystems), Geophysics (e.g., Meteorology, Atmospheric Physics, Cloud Sciences), Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, Information Sciences, Statistics etc.
Job Type Postdoctoral Researcher: To contribute to the project, a Postdoctoral Researcher should be able to independently conduct the research subject which is authorized by the Project under direction of a leader, and to be appointed intend to improve his/her research qualities.

*There may be a change in affiliation in the case of reorganization of the Agency.
