Job Description We are soliciting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position focusing on a project entitled "Evaluation of Asian emission estimates based on in-situ and satellite observations (FY2018-FY2020 Principal Investigator: Yugo Kanaya)", which is one of the sub-themes of “Refinement of anthropogenic emission estimates of black carbon and methane and their reduction sensitivity (2-1803)". The project is funded by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan.

[Job Specification]
In this position, the successful candidate will develop the means to determine emission rates of black carbon and methane from Asia more accurately using observational data, related to the 2-1803 project. The candidate’s research efforts will advance relevant scientific knowledge and understanding of the associated emission mechanisms to support activities outlined by the Assessment Report of the IPCC and Arctic Council.

Specific topics include one or more of the following:
1) Evaluation and refinement of BC emission estimates using in-situ observations, satellite data, and/or atmospheric transport model simulations, with carbon monoxide (CO) used as a tracer. Determination of wet deposition/transport efficiency of BC in terms of long-range transport to the Arctic and other distant regions.
2) Integration of new satellite observations (TROPOMI, featured with a high spatial resolution) into the emission analyses (CO and methane), with a new exploitation on methane emissions from the perspective of atmospheric pollution research.
3) Relating the obtained scientific information to socioeconomic analysis of emission reductions.

To promote proactive research, the following data and tools will be available, along with the related support and advice:
TROPOMI satellite data, Long-term observation data at remote sites (incl. Fukue Island), BC/CO data observed on JAMSTEC's research vessels, Air quality monitoring data of the Ministry of the Environment (including methane), Atmospheric tracer transport model FLEXPART, Emission inventory data (bottom up), Tropospheric chemistry reanalysis data derived from data assimilation (developed by Dr. Kazuyuki Miyazaki of JAMSTEC, a co-investigator of the project), Model simulation data released from the European Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), etc.

Job Type Postdoctoral Researcher: To contribute to the project, a Postdoctoral Researcher should be able to independently conduct the research subject which is authorized by the Project under direction of a leader, and to be appointed intend to improve his/her research qualities.

*There may be a change in affiliation in the case of reorganization of the Agency.
Requirements Applicants are required to have been awarded or expect to have obtained a Ph.D. in a related field by the date of employment. In addition, no more than 5 years can have passed between the last day of the fiscal year in which the applicants obtained a Ph.D. and the date of employment.

*Appointment date is negotiable.
*One contract period is a maximum of 1 fiscal year.
*The contract period can be renewed but the total contract period is a maximum of 3 fiscal years (until March 31,2021) depending on the progress of the research.
*The contract period mentioned above will change according to budget of this project.

*In accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*This position is a non-tenure-track, fixed-term employee position.
Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
 JPY 5,250,000

*There are no raise, bonus and retirement allowance.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful applicant will receive relocation allowances in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws.
(2) An allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) The employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) The JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) A housing lease service is not available.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.

d) Publication (achievement) list including thesis titles (1 copy).
*Please list publications in refereed (peer-reviewed) journals separately from unrefereed publications (1 copy).
e) A list of competitive research funds awarded to the applicant (1 copy).
*If you have not been awarded any, include "none" in the list.
f) 2 (or fewer) representative publications (1 copy).
g) A letter of recommendation from a senior research scientist. The person providing the recommendation should send the letter to JAMSTEC directly by POST or email. In the case of email, a signed letter in PDF format should be attached. The applicant’s name should be specified on the envelope or in the title of the email. Letters of recommendation written by a JAMSTEC employee or JAMSTEC Visiting Scientist will not be accepted.
