[Marine Ecosystem Research Group, Earth Surface System Research Center (ESS), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC)]
Recruitment of Postdoctoral Researcher

Available Position JAMSTEC is recruiting a total of one position as a Postdoctoral Researcher.
Marine Ecosystem Research Group, Earth Surface System Research Center (ESS), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC)
Job Description We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position as part of the project entitled "Computationally Efficient Models for Resolving CEllular and COMmunity Composition of Plankton (CECOMP) (2019-February 28,2022 Principal Investigator: S. Lan Smith)". The project is funded by JSPS as a bilateral research collaboration between researchers in Japan and Germany. This project will provide the successful applicant with ample opportunities for active international collaboration with world-leading researchers in this field of study, several of whom are close collaborators of the Principal Investigator. The position will be based within the Marine Ecosystem Dynamics Research Group, Research and Development Center for Global Change (RCGC), Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), where the research project is to be conducted.

[Job Specification]
This project is aimed at developing and testing new computationally efficient models of the coupled dynamics of multiple nutrients and carbon, as mediated by the growth of phytoplankton in oceanic and aquatic environments. It will focus on the dynamics of the two important macronutrients, nitrogen and phosphorus. Model performance will be evaluated by comparing model results with observed spatiotemporal distributions of these nutrients and of chlorophyll. Initial model development and testing will be conducted using 0-D and 1-D model setups. Later in the project, these new models, and plankton and nutrients, will be applied and tested in 3-D ocean models.
Tasks will include developing new models of nutrient cycles and phytoplankton growth in the ocean, using these models to conduct simulations, testing the performance of said models against data from observations, publishing the results of this research in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, and continually developing his/her skills. This project requires close collaboration with the counterpart Principal Investigator in Germany. The successful applicant will be expected to visit Germany for a period of a few weeks to one month each year to collaborate with the counterpart Principal Investigator and colleagues there and also to collaborate with those colleagues when they visit JAMSTEC. The Postdoctoral Researcher will also be expected to participate actively in, and present results at, international research conferences, such as ASLO and AGU, and other scientific workshops.

[Relevant Research Fields]

Job Type Postdoctoral Researcher: To contribute to the project, a Postdoctoral Researcher should be able to independently conduct the research subject which is authorized by the Project under direction of a leader, and to be appointed to improve his/her research qualities.
