Job Description “Deep-sea Bio Open Innovation Platform” in the Research and Development Center for Marine Biosciences, JAMSTEC, is soliciting applications for Project Technical Scientist or Project Senior Technical Scientist positions.

This open innovation platform was established in September, 2017 to facilitate innovation from deep-sea bio resources. The platform will provide deep-sea sediments, deep-sea microbial strains, and environmental genomic information, which have been stored in JAMSTEC, to companies, universities, and research institutes.

[Research Description]
The successful applicant will engage in the project, in cooperation with other scientists and research scientists, as described below.
1. Bioinformatic analyses and database constructions for shotgun metagenomic sequences and SSU rRNA gene tag sequences from diverse marine environments.
2. Consulting for the researchers in companies, universities, and research institutes who wish to use the environmental genomic database.
3. Research and development for advanced platform projects.

Job Type Project Scientist: To contribute to the project, a Project Scientist is expected to perform world-leading research independently and share the results through scientific publications.

Project Technical Scientist: To contribute to the project, a Project Technical Scientist is expected to take a leading role in research, technology development, and technology innovation.

*There may be a change in affiliation if the Agency is reorganized.
*At the time of appointment, the job type (Project Scientist or Project Technical Scientist) will be determined in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws.
Requirements Project Scientist: The successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. and have a strong enough record to be a scientist in a closely related research field.

Project Technical Scientist: The successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. and have a strong enough record to be a technical scientist in a closely related research field.

Working Conditions & Contract Period (1) Number of positions:
1 position for a Project Scientist or Project Technical Scientist

(2) Type of contract:
Fixed-term employee

(3) Working Hours:
Discretionary labor system
 
(4) Contract Period:
January 1, 2019 to March 31, 2019.
*The contract period can be renewed but the total contract period is a maximum of 4 fiscal years (until March 31, 2022) depending on the progress of the research.

*Appointment date is negotiable.
*One contract period is a maximum of 1 fiscal year.
*The contract period mentioned above will change according to budget of this project.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaw, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*This position is a non-tenure-track, fixed-term employee position.
Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
e.g. JPY 6,000,000
*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, with consideration of the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*There are no bonus and retirement allowance.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful applicant will receive relocation allowances in accordance with the JAMSTEC's bylaws.
(2) An allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) The employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) The JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) A housing lease service is available in accordance with JAMSTEC’s bylaws.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.
Application Procedure (1) Required documents
a) A CV (1 copy). Valid email and home addresses must be provided.
b) A summary of your research (1 copy, 1 page).
c) Your research plan at JAMSTEC (1 copy, 1 page).
d) Publication (achievement) list including thesis titles (1 copy).
*Please list publications in refereed (peer-reviewed) journals separately from unrefereed publications (1 copy).
e) A list of competitive research funds awarded to the applicant (1 copy).
*If you have not been awarded any, include "none" in the list.
f) 2 (or fewer) representative publications (1 copy).
g) 2 letters of recommendation from two senior research scientists (1 letter from each). The person providing the recommendation should send the letter to JAMSTEC directly by POST or E-mail. In the case of E-mail, a signed letter in PDF format should be attached. The applicant’s name should be specified on the envelope or in the title of the E-mail. Letters of recommendation written by a JAMSTEC employee or a JAMSTEC visiting scientist will not be accepted.

(2) Submission
The required documents must be sent by POST or E-mail and should reach JAMSTEC on or before the closing date.
*Please write "PERSONNEL, FY2018 Deep-sea Open-Innovation Platform Recruitment" (in red) on the front of the envelope. Registered mail is recommended for confirming receipt of your application (no acknowledgement will be provided).
*If you send an application via E-mail, all files must be converted to PDF format. E-mail attachments can be up to 25 MB. Please include "PERSONNEL, FY2018 Deep-sea Open-Innovation Platform Recruitment" in the title.

(3) Interview and appointment
Applicants will be selected based on submitted application material, followed by an interview. Currently, interviews are scheduled in October or November, 2018. The successful applicant is expected to join us on January 1, 2019.
