2009 Announcement of a Research Scientist Position at the Tropical Climate Variability Research Program

Recruitment for Tropical Climate Variability Research Program (TCVRP) / MJO Research Team in the Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC), Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) will be as follows.

Tropical Climate Variability Research Program This program investigates the tropical climate phenomena such as El Nino, Indian Ocean Dipole Mode event, monsoons, and the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO). With this announcement, MJO Research Team of this program invites a qualified applicant for the study on the MJO as a research scientist.

Main theme of the MJO Research Team is to reveal the initiation and development mechanism of convection in the MJO by analyzing in-situ observations as well as satellite data. Currently, we are seeking a research scientist who studies this topics in terms of air-sea interaction. In addition, it will be requested to join the field experiments which will be led by this team. Note that MJO Research Team is in charge of the international field experiment CINDY2011 (Cooperative Indian Ocean experiment on Intraseasonal Variability in the Year 2011; for more information on this, please check at http://www.jamstec.go.jp/iorgc/cindy/index.html).
Qualification for Application Applicant must hold a Ph.D. degree in atmospheric and/or oceanic sciences and should have knowledge on tropical meteorology and/or oceanography. It is desirable that applicants have strong interests in the field observations and the promotion of the Indian Ocean sciences.

Contract Period Period of employment is from January 4 (or as early as possible after January 4), 2010 and the contract period is five Japanese fiscal years at longest(*).
*Japanese fiscal year starts/ends April/March. Therefore, four years and three months is the maximum period of this contract.
Terms of Employment (1) Salary will be decided according to the JAMSTEC’s bylaws.
(2) Travel allowance will be provided according to JAMSTEC’s bylaws.
(3) The participant and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for insurance and labor insurance according to the current statutory proportion.
(4) Housing lease service is available in accordance with JAMSTEC’s bylaws.
(5) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(6) No bonus/retirement allowance will be provided.
(7) Holidays and Vacations: Saturday, Sunday, public holidays, the year-end and the beginning of the year are holidays.
There are annual vacations with pay, special vacations, and leave of absence for care and maternity leave.
(8) Others: There are various kind of subsidies available for personal interests/welfare provided by JAMSTEC employees cooperative.

Closing Date for Application October 15 (Thu.), 2009
Selection and Employment (1) Candidates will be selected based on submitted application documents, followed by interviews.
(2) Interview will be conducted in Japanese or English, and it is now scheduled in the end of October 2009. Exact date will be noted only to the applicants who passed the screening by application documents.
(3) Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
(4) Submitted documents will not be returned to the applicant. The personal information we get through this recruitment is to be used only for our screening and our procedures accompanying. We deal with it safely and properly based on the personal information protection law. After our screening and procedures, we shred documents.
