2010 Announcement of Postdoctoral Scientist Position for Recruitment at Research Institute for Global Change of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC)

The Tropical Climate Research Program in Research Institute for Global Change is seeking one Postdoctoral Scientist for transferring data quality control technology to the Republic of Indonesia (BPPT) and analyzing outputs of climate forecast model data, re-analysis data and observation data for the purpose of mapping rainfall anomaly over the Indonesian Maritime Continent in seasonal to interannual timescale. In this project, we will transfer our surface buoy (TRITON buoy) technology including data quality control to Republic of Indonesia, and support their effort to develop their climate observation-forecast system to mitigate various disasters in Indonesian region. This project is funded by Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) which is jointly supported by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to promote international joint researches on global issues with developing countries.

Applications are invited to cover the following topics:

(1) Analysis of outputs of forecast coupled model, re-analysis of ocean and atmosphere, and observation data for detecting the characteristics of rainfall anomaly over the Indonesian Maritime region in seasonal to inter-annual time scale
(2) Transferring data quality control technology to the Republic of Indonesia, BPPT.
Qualification for application
(1) At the time of appointment, the successful candidates should have Ph.D. degree(s) in climate sciences or such related fields as oceanography and atmospheric sciences. It is highly recommended that candidates have advanced knowledge and skills on observational and model output data analyses.

Contract Period Period of employment is from April 1st, (early as possible after April 1st), 2010, to March 31, 2011. Employment contract is renewable every fiscal year depending on the progress of research. (Maximum of three fiscal years, until the end of the project entitled “Climate Variability Study and Societal Application through Indonesia-Japan “Maritime Continent COE” – Radar-Buoy Network” of “Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) in March 31, 2013.
Treatment
(1) Payment will be decided according to the JAMSTEC regulations.
(2) Traveling expenses will be provided according to regulations.
(3) The participant and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance according to the current statutory proportion.
(4) Housing lease service is not available.
(5) A commutation allowance will be provided.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturday, Sunday, public holidays, the year-end and the beginning of the year are holidays. There are annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence for care and maternity leave.
(7) Other:
  1. There are various kinds of subsidy system for personal interests/welfare.
  2. The Execution of Special Business Type Working Hour System is adopted for a full-time research scientist by the labor-management agreement with a worker representative.
  3. There are several times of business trips to Indonesia (BPPT offices, laboratories, or research vessels), totally three to four months per year.
Method of application

  1. One copy of research proposal including the research program which you desire to participate in. (A4 size, 1 page)
  2. One copy of reference (recommendations) written by a senior research scientist. The references should be sent directly from them to Human Resources, Research Support Division I, Research Support Department. Applicant's name should be written on the envelope.
  3. One copy of a resume. (attache your email address for contact)
  4. One copy of publication list including thesis titles.
    Please separate those with referred journals from other publications.
  5. One copy of a list for competitive funds from some kind of research institution in JAPAN.
    (Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research, any funded research from Japan Science and Technology Agency, etc)

Selection and employment
(1) Screening of application materials and interviews will be conducted in Japan.
(2) Interviews will be conducted in Japanese or English.
