The ocean-atmosphere interaction research team of OCCRP in RIGC solicits an application for Postdoctoral Researcher to "In situ observations of air-sea interaction in the Kuroshio-Oyashio Extension region", which is one of the subjects of Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI) on Innovative Areas "Multi-scale air-sea interaction under the East-Asian monsoon: A "hot spot" in the climate system" (FY2010-2014).
Applicants are invited for the Postdoctral Researcher in the following research activities:

Analysis of in situ oceanic and atmospheric observation data by ships, buoys and radiosondes, and research on atmospheric response on ocean variations |
| (2) |
Research on ocean meso/submeso-scale structure and water exchange processes by using data of ships, Argo floats and underwater glider |
| (3) |
Analysis of numerical model and satellite data, and verification of them by using in situ observation data |
This Postdoctral Researcher will be required to participate in cruises for observations and their preparations. |
| Requirements |
| 1) |
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Oceanography or Meteorology, or a closely related field. Knowledge and experience of large dataset handling and UNIX/LINUX environment are required. Also, applicants must be within five years since awarded a Ph.D. at the time of appointment. Successful candidate will be hired as a Postdoctoral Researcher. |

| Contract Period |
Period of employment is from January 1st, 2011 to March 31st, 2011. Employment contract is renewable every fiscal year depending on the progress of research and research project, but maximum for twice (maximum three fiscal years). Appointment date is negotiable. |

Annual salary : JPY5,256,000 (JPY438,000/month) |

| 1) |
Travel allowance will be provided in accordance with JAMSTEC’s bylaws. |
| 2) |
The participant and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for insurance and labor insurance according to the current statutory proportion. |
| 3) |
Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided. |
| 4) |
No bonus/retirement allowance provided. |
| 5) |
Holidays and vacations: Saturday, Sunday, public holidays, year-end and beginning of the year are holidays. There are annual vacations with pay, special vacations, and leave of absence for care and maternity leave. |

Other: There are various kinds of subsidies available for personal interests/welfare provided by JAMSTEC’s employees’ cooperative. |

One reference (recommendation) letter written by a senior research scientist, which should be sent directly from them by POST. Applicant’s name should be written on the envelope. |

One copy of publication list including thesis titles. Please separate those with referred journals from other publications. |
| e) |
Copies of two (or less) representative publications. |
| f) |
One copy of a list for competitive research fund from some kind of research institution in Japan, if any. (Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research, any funded research from Japan Science and Technology Agency, etc) |

Required documents must be sent by POST and reach JAMSTEC before/on the closing date. Electronic format will NOT be accepted.

(3)Interview and Appointment
Candidates will be selected based on submitted application material, followed by an interview currently scheduled in mid November 2010.
The successful candidates are expected to join us from January 1st, 2011, but the appointment date is negotiable. |
