Available Position & Research Topics Available Position: Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Team (TERT) in Environmental Biogeochemical Cycle Research Program (EBCRP), RIGC will be recruiting total of 1 position as Postdoctoral Researcher.
Job Description A Postdoctoral Researcher is supposed to be involved in either the following research activities:
(1) Development of estimation algorithms of vegetation physical parameters (leaf area index, above-ground biomass, structure etc.) and land cover classification by remote sensing data, and their mapping over in Japan and Eastern Asia.
(2) Construction of datasets which can be applied to the evaluation of the ecosystem service/function.

*This Postdoctoral Researcher is to engage in the Environment Research and Technology Development Fund (theme ID: F-1101) supported by the Ministry of the Environment (MOE). The research theme is "Study on ecosystem function over extensive regions by remote sensing" which is one of five sub-themes of "Development of method of ecosystem service evaluation for the strategy against climate change and biodiversity conservation."

Requirements Applicant is required to hold a Ph.D. degree in related field within five years prior to the date of employment, or expected to obtain a Ph.D. degree in related field by the date of employment.

Applicant is expected to be familiar with image processing software, GIS, and/or coding language (e.g. FORTRAN etc.) and have a proven skill of geographical mapping.

Working Condition and Contract Period Period of employment is from January 1st, 2013 to March 31st, 2013 (one fiscal year).
Employment contract is renewable every fiscal year depending on the progress of research and research projection, but until March 31st, 2014.

Employment Status: fixed term system, Discretionally labor system
Salary e.g. Annual salary: JPY 5,250,000

*No bonus/retirement allowance provided.
Terms of Employment 1) On appointment, relocation fee will be provided in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws.
2) The participant and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for insurance and labor insurance according to the current statutory proportion.
3) Housing lease service is not available.
4) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
5) Holidays and vacations: Saturday, Sunday, public holidays, year-end and beginning of the year are holidays. There are annual leave with pay, special leaves, and leave of absence for care and maternity leave.
6) Other: There are various kinds of subsidies available for personal interests/welfare provided by JAMSTEC's employees' cooperative.

a) One copy of abstract of your research which you had been engaged in. (A4 size, 1page)
b) One copy of your research plan in the Team of JAMSTEC. (A4 size, 1 page)
c) One reference (recommendation) letters written by a senior research scientist, which should be sent directly from them by POST. Applicant's name should be written on the envelope. *Reference letter written by JAMSTEC employee or Visiting Scientist cannot be accepted.
d) One copy of CV. (a valid email address is essential)

e) One copy of publication list including thesis titles. Please separate peer-reviewed papers from other publications.
f) Two or less copies of representative publications.
g) One copy of a list for competitive research fund from some kind of research institution in Japan, if any. (Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research, any funded research from Japan Science and Technology Agency, etc)

(3) Interview and Appointment
Candidates will be selected based on submitted application material, followed by an interview currently scheduled in late November, 2012.
The successful candidates are expected to join us from January 1st, 2013.
*The transportation fee is payable to candidates from abroad, but only under specific situations.
