Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC) of Japan Agency for Marine-earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) aims to contribute to seeking solutions for global environmental problems such as global warming, through development of simulation models for projection of environmental change. Here we recruit staff for the model development and analysis on model experimental results etc. under "Program for Climate Risk Information" by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and Technology (MEXT). Job Description RIGC has been developing various simulation models for environmental projection, including an ice sheet model and an earth system model (ESM) developed by incorporating oceanic and terrestrial ecosystem dynamics, atmospheric chemistry and aerosol transport processes etc. on the basis of atmosphere-ocean coupled general circulation model. The successful candidates will be working on the theme below.
Sophistication of the ice sheet model and/or ESM such as improvement of ocean ecosystem processes, analysis of model results with an emphasis on assessment on impacts of geoengineering, tipping elements and irreversibility of climate change;

*There may be change in affiliation in case of reorganization in the Agency.
Require-ments (1) Ph.D. degree in fields related to the above description is required.
*Postdoctoral Researcher must have Ph.D. degree gained within the last five years prior to the date of employment, or expected to obtain a Ph.D. degree in related field by the date of employment.

(2) The prospective candidate should have some experience in development of 3D-PFT ecosystem model, and excellent communication skill for working in international scientific communities.

Working Condition and Contract Period Period of employment is from February 1st, 2013 to March 31st, 2013 (one Japanese fiscal year)
*Appoint date is negotiable.
*One contract term is one Japanese fiscal year.
*The employment contract is renewable every fiscal year depending on the position, the progress of the research, and the research project funds.
<Postdoctoral Researcher>
*The maximum total contract term is three Japanese fiscal years. (until March 31th, 2015)
*There is the possibility of application for extension until March 2017, depending on research progress, and in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
<Project Scientist>
*The maximum total contract term is five Japanese fiscal years. (until March 31th, 2017)

Employment Status: fixed term system, Discretionary labor system
Salary Salary will be decided in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws in annual salary system, by considering the candidate's academic career, research ability and research role in RIGC. The expected salary will be as follows:

Postdoctoral Researcher : JPY 5,250,000/ year
Project Scientist: JPY 5,400,000 ~ 5,700,000/ year

*No bonus/retirement allowance provided.
Terms of Employment 1) On appointment, relocation fee will be provided in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws.
2) The participant and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for health insurance and labor insurance according to the current statutory proportion.
3) Housing lease service is available.
*Except to Postdoctoral Researcher
4) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
5) Holidays and vacations: Saturday, Sunday, public holidays, year-end and beginning of the year are holidays. There are annual vacations with pay, special vacations, and care and maternity leave.
6) Other: There are various kinds of subsidies available for personal interests/welfare provided by JAMSTEC's employees' cooperative.

(3) Interview and Appointment
Candidates will be selected based on submitted application material, followed by an interview currently scheduled in late December 2012. The successful candidate is expected to join us from February 1st, 2013.
*The transportation fee is payable to candidates from abroad, but only under specific situations.
