Available Position JAMSTEC is recruiting one permanent employee, either a Principal Scientist or Principal Technical Scientist.

Job Description In April 2019, JAMSTEC will initiate the fourth mid-term plan for its research and development and create a new department that will pursue creative research and technology development for basic, integrated, and leap knowledge. This department will include a new technology program for basic, integrated, and leap knowledge. JAMSTEC is soliciting applications for a permanent employee, either a Principal Scientist or Principal Technical Scientist, who will participate in the following research directions.

[Research Description]
The new technology program aims to contribute to:
(1) Basic research and technology development that supports the major research and development projects at JAMSTEC;
(2) Integrated research and technology development that bridges the independent research and development projects at JAMSTEC;
(3) Advanced, challenging research and technology development that will create major future research and development projects at JAMSTEC; and
(4) Unique, singular research and technology development that may lead to the creation of future leap knowledge and disruptive innovation.

[Job Specifications]
We are seeking a Principal Scientist or Principal Technical Scientist to lead scientific and engineering work related to the above-mentioned research and technology development efforts internationally. The successful applicant will be required to manage the new program, as a director.

Since the new program will start in April 2019, we do not yet have detailed information on the research and technology development of the program. However, the new program will work synergistically with other programs in the new department. These other programs are associated with existing research departments and institutions, including the Department of Subsurface Geobiological Analysis and Research (D-SUGAR) and the Kochi Institute for Core Sample Research. Job Type (The following description (1) and (2) provide position name and definition for the role for which we are currently recruiting.)

Scientist:
To contribute to the Agency, a Scientist should be able to perform world-leading research independently and share the results through scientific publications.
(1) Principal Scientist:
A Principal Scientist is expected to achieve world-leading research results as a research expert representing JAMSTEC, and to improve quality and efficiency of JAMSTEC’s research results (Buildup of information and cultivation of human resources included). In addition, A Principal Scientist is also expected to support and cooperate with external affiliated organizations actively, and provide appropriate advice and recommendation over a decision-making on JAMSTEC’s management that requires advanced expertise.

Technical Scientist:
To contribute to the Agency, a Technical Scientist is expected to take a leading role in research, technology development, and technology innovation.
(2) Principal Technical Scientist:
A Principal Technical Scientist is expected to achieve world-leading innovative research and technology development results as a research and development expert representing JAMSTEC, and to improve quality and efficiency of JAMSTEC’s research and development results as well as technological achievements (Buildup of information and cultivation of human resources included). In addition, a Principal Technical Scientist is also expected to support and cooperate with external affiliated organizations actively, and provide appropriate advice and recommendation over a decision-making on JAMSTEC’s management that requires advanced expertise.

*There may be a change in affiliation in the case of reorganization of the Agency.
*At the time of appointment, the Job Type (Principal Scientist or Principal Technical Scientist) will be determined in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws.
Requirements Principal Scientist:
The successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. and have a strong enough record to be a principal scientist in a closely related research field.

Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)

*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*There is no bonus or retirement allowance.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful applicant will receive a relocation allowance in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws.
(2) An allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) The employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) The JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) A housing lease service is available in accordance with JAMSTEC’s bylaws.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.

b) A summary of your research (1 copy, A4 size, 2 pages)
c) Your research plan at JAMSTEC (1 copy, A4 size, 1 page)
d) A list of publications and achievements, including thesis title(s) (1 copy).
*Please list publications in refereed (peer-reviewed) journals separately from unrefereed publications and other achievements.
*Please mark outstanding achievements (5 to 10).
*Please attach achievements other than publications.
e) A list of competitive research funds awarded to the applicant (1 copy).
*If you have not been awarded any, include "none" in the list.
f) 5 (or fewer) representative publications (1 copy).
g) 3 letters of recommendation from 3 principal research scientists (1 letter from each). 1 out of 3 letters should be written by a principal research scientist belonging a non-Japanese institution or university.The person providing the recommendation should send the letter directly to JAMSTEC by POST or E-mail. In the case of E-mail, a signed letter in PDF format should be attached. The applicant’s name should be specified on the envelope or in the title of the E-mail. Letters of recommendation written by a JAMSTEC employee or JAMSTEC Visiting Scientist will not be accepted.

(2) Submission:
The required documents must be sent by POST or E-MAIL and should reach JAMSTEC on or before the closing date.

(3) Interview and appointment
Applicants will be selected based on submitted application material, followed by an interview. Currently, the first round of interviews are scheduled in November or December, 2018 together with the second round interviews. The successful applicant is expected to join us on April 1, 2019.

*A travel allowance is available for applicants from abroad, but only under certain circumstances.
