Recruitment of a Project Engineer

Department of Subsurface Geobiological Analysis and Research (D-SUGAR)
Job Description We are soliciting applications for Project Engineer for Grant-in-Aid Scientific Research entitled "Understanding the ancient global nitrogen cycle for the origin of life and early evolution of metabolism and microorganisms (FY2017-2019; PI: Ken Takai)". The project is supported by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).

The successful applicant will be expected to understand and carry out the following:
(1) General geochemical analyses and the interpretation of results as pertaining to ancient nitrogen cycles on early Earth,
(2) Isotope ratio mass spectrometric (IR-MS) analyses, particularly of nitrogen-containing compounds,
(3) Various research tasks as needed.

Job Type Project Engineer:
To contribute to the project, a Project Engineer is expected to manage, improve and advance the infrastructure. Establishment of technology based on a background of general technical knowledge such as information system, improvement of technical management functions is also inclusive.

*There may be a change in affiliation in the case of reorganization of the Agency.
Requirements The successful applicant must have a Master’s degree in a closely related field. Those who have an equivalent ability with extensive experience will also be considered.

Applicants should have abilities/skills and knowledge of the following:
1. Geochemistry and nitrogen cycles.
2. Chemical analysis techniques, particularly isotope ratio mass spectrometric (IR-MS) analysis.
3. Fundamental skills with a personal computer, e.g., Microsoft Word, Power Point, and Excel.

Working Conditions & Contract Period (1) Number of positions:
1 position for a Project Engineer

Fixed-term employee

(3) Working Hours
9:00-17:30 (Lunch hours 12:15-13:00)
(4) Contract Period
April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020.
*One contract period is a maximum of 1 fiscal year.

*Appointment date is negotiable.
*One contract period is a maximum of 1 fiscal year. The contract period will not be renewed.
*The contract period mentioned above will change according to budget of this project.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*This position is a non-tenure-track, fixed-term employee position.
Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
  e.g., JPY4,500,000~7,000,000

*Overtime payment will be added to monthly salary.
*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaw, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*There is no bonus and retirement allowance.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful applicant will receive a relocation allowance in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws.
(2) An allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) The employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by the current statute.
(4) The JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) A housing lease service is available in accordance with JAMSTEC’s bylaws.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.

(3) Interview and appointment
Applicants will be selected based on submitted application materials, followed by an interview. Currently, interviews are scheduled in January, 2019. The successful applicant is expected to join us on April 1, 2019.
