Job Description Research Unit for Ecosystem Monitoring, Project Team for Analyses of Changes in East Japan Marine Ecosystems is soliciting applications for a Project Engineer who will engage in the research detailed below as part of the Tohoku Ecosystem-Associated Marine Sciences (TEAMS), which is funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) of Japan.

[Research Subjects]
To provide information on sustainable fishing resources to local governments and fishermen’s cooperatives JAMSTEC TEAMS is working on ecosystem modelling off the coast of Tohoku. The following research activities are primarily required in this position:
1) Dissection of marine organisms, especially invertebrata and fish, and stomach content analysis
2) Meta-barcoding of stomach contents
3) Participation in field research aboard a research vessel
These activities will be conducted under collaboration with other project members.

Job Type Project Engineer: To contribute to the project, a Project Engineer is expected to manage, improve and advance the infrastructure. Establishment of technology based on a background of general technical knowledge such as information system, improvement of technical management functions is also inclusive.

*There may be a change in affiliation in the case of reorganization of the Agency.
Requirements The successful applicant must have a master's degree in a closely related field. Those who have equivalent ability with extensive experience are also acceptable.

Applicants with basic knowledge of marine biology, and experience in DNA sequencing using next generation sequencers, stomach content analysis, and participation in research cruises, are welcomed.

Working Conditions & Contract Period (1) Number of positions:
1 position for a Project Engineer

Fixed-term employee

(3) Working Hours
9:00-17:30 (Lunch hours 12:15-13:00)
 
(4) Contract Period
March 1, 2018 to March 31, 2018.
*The contract period can be renewed but the total contract period is a maximum of 4 fiscal years (until March 31, 2021) depending on the progress of the research.

*Appointment date is negotiable.
*One contract period is a maximum of 1 fiscal year.
*The contract period mentioned above will change according to budget of this project.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*This position is a non-tenure-track, fixed-term employee position.
Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
  e.g., JPY4,500,000~7,000,000

*Overtime payment will be added to monthly salary.
*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*There is no bonus and retirement allowance.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful applicant will receive a relocation allowance in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws.
(2) An allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) The employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by the current statute.
(4) The JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) A housing lease service is available in accordance with JAMSTEC’s bylaws.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.

(3) Interview and appointment
Applicants will be selected based on submitted application materials, followed by an interview. Currently, interviews are scheduled in late January or February, 2018. The successful applicant is expected to join us on March 1, 2018.
