[Leading Project] Cross-sectoral approach to tackle on urgent issues

JAMSTEC set "Leading project" aside from usual research sections, to focus on research development tasks which the government takes its initiative, e.g., development of real-time monitoring system for massive ocean-trench earthquake, active contribution to the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report, and research for submarine resources and recyclable energies with upgrading of exploration technologies.

Earthquake and Tsunami research project for Disaster Prevention

JAMSTEC has a primary role to the contract researches requested by MEXT such as "Dense Oceanfloor Network system for Earthquakes and Tsunamis", "Research concerning Interaction between the Tokai, Tonankai and Nankai Earthquakes".
JAMSTEC explores earthquake related research intensively to aim for the contribution to the development of the state-of-the-art ocean floor observation technology, advancement of simulation models of earthquake recurrences, disaster reduction and mitigation.
JAMSTEC develops real-time dense Oceanfloor network system around the area of Kumano-nada off Kii peninsula.

Global Warming Projection Research Project for Contribution to AR5 of IPCC

This project is to perform a part of below researches:
1) The contract research requested by MEXT "Innovative Program of Climate Change Projection for the 21st Century" and
2) the contract research requested by Environment ministry "policy-support to Global warming and total research which relates to the climate change scenario in order to prevalence and enlightenment"
By using the super computer "Earth Simulator", the researches of sophisticated global warming prediction model, cutting down of prediction uncertainty, and impact assessment of natural disaster are driven forward and are contributed to the IPCC 5th evaluation report. Go along with the contribution, scientific foundation is offered to the policy of climate change measure.

Submarine Resources Research Project

JAMSTEC promotes to carry out a target "implementation of development and growth for submarine resources and recyclable marine energies" described in the action plan of the cabinet decision "On the New Growth Strategy" in 2010.
JAMSTEC actively implements to research for the genesis of submarine hydrothermal deposit and Co-rich Mn crust which are highly expected for huge available ore resources, and to research for generative system of methane expected as clean energy source. And we advance our deep-sea exploration technologies using AUV/ROVs through parallel efforts.
