Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Australia to Japan visits JAMSTEC

2024.04.19

On 11 April 2024, H.E. Mr Justin Hayhurst, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Australia to Japan, and his delegation visited the Yokosuka Headquarters of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC).

At the beginning of the meeting, President Yamato welcomed Ambassador Hayhurst and expressed his sincere gratitude to the Australian Government for its support over the years for research cooperation and personnel exchanges between JAMSTEC and Australian institutions.

Ambassador Hayhurst noted that Australia and Japan are both maritime nations surrounded by vast oceans and that cooperation in marine research is essential. He and his delegation attended presentations that provided an overview of research cooperation between JAMSTEC and Australian organisations in the areas of ocean observation and earthquake research, as well as a briefing on the successor programme to the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP).

The delegation also visited the research vessel Kaimei and exhibition facilities.
