Training Pool

This pool is used for developing and training divers, and there are few facilities like it in Japan. The pool is predominantly square-shaped with sides of 21 m and divided into two depth levels, 1.3 m and 3 m. Several observation windows have been installed around the sides below the surface. Poolside facilities include equipment for refilling up to ten air cylinders at a time and a diving platform that facilitates training for dives conducted at a pier or quay.

JAMSTEC has provided diving training since 1974 with the aim of facilitating the widespread application of the results of research and development in this field (the Seatopia Project and the New Seatopia Project). A wide variety of groups and individuals from all over the country, including police, fire fighters, and personnel from aquariums, use these facilities to learn about diving techniques. Japanese astronauts Mamoru Mori and Naoko Yamazaki also received instruction in this pool for zero gravity training.
