Job Description The Climate Variability Prediction and Application Research Group, Application Laboratory (APL) (Director:Swadhin K. Behera), Research Institute for Value-Added-Information Generation (VAiG), JAMSTEC is soliciting applications for one position as Scientist or Technical Scientist who will engage in the following research and development subjects:

[Research Description]
The Application Laboratory (APL), Research Institute for Value-Added-Information Generation (VAiG) aims to contribute to society by developing numerical simulation technologies and by finding ways and means to apply ensemble model predictions for the benefit of human health, agriculture, fisheries, water management, and so on. We invite applicants for a Scientist or a Technical Scientist who can conduct modeling/analyses in resesrch topics such as human health, based on climate prediction information using machine learning/artificial intelligence methods, and who can also support the development of a climate prediction system based on ocean-atmosphere coupled models.

Job Type Scientist: To contribute to the Agency, a Scientist is expected to perform world-leading research independently and share the results through scientific publications.

Technical Scientist: To contribute to the Agency, a Technical Scientist is expected to take a leading role in research, technology development, and technology innovation.

*There may be a change in affiliation in the event of reorganization of the Agency.
*At the time of appointment, the Job Type will be determined in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws.
Requirements Scientist: The successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. and have a strong enough record to be a scientist in a closely related research field.

Technical Scientist: The successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. and have a strong enough record to be a technical scientist in a closely related research field.

Working Conditions & Contract Period (1) Number of positions:

Period of employment is from April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2025.

*Appointment date is negotiable.
*One contract period is a maximum of five fiscal years. The contract period will not be renewed.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*After undergoing an evaluation during the period of employment, the contract may be modified to one without termination (termination of employment would be at the end of the fiscal year in which the employee reaches the age of 60, or the age of 65 if the employee is rehired after his/her retirement). Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
e.g., JPY 6,000,000

*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaw, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*There is no bonus or retirement allowance.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful applicant will receive a relocation allowance in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws.
(2) An allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) The employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by the current statute.
(4) The JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) A housing lease service is available in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.

c) Research plan at JAMSTEC (1 copy, 1 page)
d) Publication (achievement) list including thesis titles (1 copy)
*Please list publications in refereed (peer-reviewed) journals separately from unrefereed publications (1 copy).
e) List of competitive research funds awarded to the applicant (1 copy)
*If you have not been awarded any, include "none" in the list.
f) DOI codes of two (or fewer) representative publications. (1 copy)
*If DOI codes were not provided to publications, please submit copies of publications in PDF formats.
g) 2 letters of recommendation from two senior research scientists (1 letter from each). The person providing the recommendation should email to JAMSTEC directly with a signed letter as an attached file in PDF format . Please include the applicant's name in the subject line. A letter of recommendation written by a JAMSTEC employee or a JAMSTEC visiting scientist will not be accepted.

(2) Submission:
The required documents must be sent by E-mail and should reach JAMSTEC on or before the closing date.
*All files must be converted to PDF format. E-mail attachments can be up to 25 MB. Please include "APL DKS-004" in the subject line.

(3) Interview and appointment
Applicants will be selected based on submitted application materials, followed by an interview. The successful applicant is expected to join us on April 1, 2020.

*A travel allowance is available for applicants from abroad, but only under certain circumstances.
*Web-based online interviews by zoom are also available.
