Job Description The Marine Biodiversity and Environmental Assessment Research Center (BioEnv; Director: Katsunori Fujikura), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC) is accepting applications for a permanent position as a Principal Researcher.

To gain scientific knowledge on the impact of human activity on marine ecosystems, BioEnv plans to comprehensively analyze the distribution and impact of marine plastics on ecosystems, and to develop effective methods for dealing with them, to facilitate the conservation of marine ecosystems. The successful applicant will be required to conduct research aimed at improving our understanding of marine environmental issues, including marine plastics, by participating in international projects, for example.

The successful applicant will:
• lead research and development at JAMSTEC related to marine environmental issues, including the marine ecosystem and marine plastics, mainly through fieldwork and laboratory experiments, and will publish the findings of these studies in peer-reviewed journals.
• be proactive in promoting domestic and international collaborations (by participating in an international research network) related to marine environmental research, including marine plastics research, and in proposing cross-cutting research development strategies, while also taking full advantage of JAMSTEC resources, including next-generation human resources.
• contribute to improving marine environmental literacy.
• promote various research and management programs at BioEnv in the capacity of principal researcher.

· Researcher (Technology) is expected to conduct fundamental, originative, or advanced technology development and related research.

Principal Researcher:
Principal Researcher is expected to generate research results that lead Japan and the world and to provide appropriate advice and recommendations for highly professional decision making in the JAMSTEC management.

*Assigned affiliation will be determined at the time of appointment. However, there may be a change in affiliation in the case of reorganization of the Agency.
*At the time of appointment, the Job Title (Science/Technology) will be determined in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
Requirements The successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. in a closely related field of research or technology development.

Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
e.g., up to JPY 13,500,000

*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaw, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*Bonus and retirement allowance are included in the annual salary.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful applicant will receive relocation allowances in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(2) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) Employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) Housing lease service will be available in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.

*If you have not been awarded any, include "none" in the list.
f) 5 (or fewer) representative publications
g) 3 letters of recommendation from three senior research scientists (1 letter from each). 1 out of 3 letters should be written by a principal research scientist belonging a non-Japanese institution or university. The person providing the recommendation should E-mail to JAMSTEC directly with a signed letter as an attached file in PDF format. Please include "BioEnv AKS20-021 and the applicant's name" in the subject line. A letter of recommendation written by a JAMSTEC employee or a JAMSTEC visiting scientist will not be accepted.
