Job Description We are soliciting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher to work primarily on a research project titled “Development of retrieval algorithm and post processing of NO2 and GHGs on GOSAT-GW satellite mission with modeling and ground observations (FY2020~, Principal Investigator: Yugo Kanaya, Co-investigators: Prabir Patra, Takashi Sekiya, Masayuki Takigawa)“, as contracted with National Institute for Environmental Research (NIES) and supported by the Ministry of Environment, Japan.

The GOSAT satellite series has mainly focused on the collection of data related to global greenhouse gases (GHGs) including tracer species to clarify their anthropogenic emissions. The launch of the third-generation GOSAT-GW, which collects GHG and water cycle data, is planned for FY2023; this mission will include new target monitoring of large emissions from cities, and will further support the joint analysis of CO2 and methane as GHGs and NO2 as a tracer. This position requires (but is not limited to) the performance of innovative and independent research studies that will contribute to the broader project goals of the project, involving integrated research on GHGs and NO2. The models and tools developed within this project will be applied to the related Model for Interdisciplinary Research on Climate (MIROC) and Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) models in collaboration with the broader research community. Specific goals of the project include the following:
1) Transport, chemistry, and emissions analyses using atmospheric chemistry–transport models integrating GHGs and NO2 data.
2) Development of methods to improve emissions estimates over large areas based on GOSAT observations and numerical modeling simulations.
3) Processing of large-volume datasets obtained through satellite observations and numerical simulations, using the FORTRAN, Python, and related languages, as well as visualization software.
4) Preparation of project outcome reports and peer-reviewed publications in high-quality journals.

Job Type Postdoctoral Researcher: To contribute to the project, a Postdoctoral Researcher should be able to independently conduct the research subject which is authorized by the Project under direction of a leader, and to be appointed to improve his/her research qualities.

Requirements Applicants are required to have been awarded or expect to have obtained a Ph.D. in a related field by the effective date of employment. In addition, no more than 5 years can have passed between the last day of the fiscal year in which the applicants obtained a Ph.D. and the effective date of employment.(i.e., applicants who earned a Ph.D. after April 2015 are eligible.)

*In accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*This position is a non-tenure-track, fixed-term employee position.
Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
 JPY 5,250,000
*There are no raise or bonuses.
*The retirement allowance is included in the annual salary.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful applicant will receive relocation allowances in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(2) An allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) The employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) The JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) Housing lease service is not available.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.
