[Environmental Geochemical Cycle Research Group, Earth Surface System Research Center (ESS), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC)]
Recruitment of Project Researcher (II) (AGS20-018)

Available Position JAMSTEC is recruiting one position as a Project Researcher (II) (AGS20-018)
Environmental Geochemical Cycle Research Group, Earth Surface System Research Center (ESS), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC)
Job Description We are soliciting applications for a Project Researcher (II) position focusing on a research project entitled, “Development of algorithms for retrieval and post-processing of NO2 and GHG data collected by GOSAT-GW using modeling and ground observation approaches (from FY2020; Principal Investigator: Yugo Kanaya)”. The project is a subcontract from the National Institute for Environmental Research (NIES) and supported by the Ministry of Environment, Japan.

The Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) has mainly focused on the global detection of greenhouse gases (GHGs), including tracer species, with the aim of clarifying their anthropogenic emission sources. The third-generation satellite, GOSAT-GW, which focuses on greenhouse gas and water cycles, is expected to launch in FY2023, and will monitor large emissions of NO2, CO2, and methane from cities. The responsibilities of the successful applicant will include (but not be limited to) conducting independent, innovative research studies that contribute to the broader goals of the project, such as conducting field observations to improve the reliability of satellite NO2 data retrieval. To this end, the applicant is able to use the relevant instruments, existing data, observational network, and international collaborative framework of JAMSTEC.

The duties of the successful applicant are as follows:
1) Conduct observational studies from ground stations and/or research vessels to evaluate NO2 satellite observations.
2) Perform data analysis to identify sources of bias in satellite observations and improve algorithms for their correction.
3) Foster international collaborations to develop a harmonized validation network with global coverage.
4) Prepare project outcome reports and peer-reviewed publications for submission to high-quality journals.
