Job Description The Earth Surface System Research Center (ESS; Director: Naomi Harada) ,the Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC) is accepting applications for a permanent position as a Principal Researcher.

The ESS focuses on greenhouse gases and fine particles in the atmosphere that drive climate change, and plans to achieve a comprehensive understanding of their sources and sinks, including ecosystem exchange and emissions from human activities. We also hope to improve understanding of the Earth system and create scientific knowledge to help resolve problems related to climate and environmental changes. In this context, we are recruiting a Principal Researcher to conduct research and development to elucidate the physico-biogeochemical cycles of relevant substances in the atmosphere/ocean/land system, mainly using numerical modeling. The successful applicant will also engage in related activities at an international level.

The successful applicant will:
• conduct research and development on environmental geochemical cycles over Asia or on a global scale, mainly using numerical modeling, to clarify the sources and sinks of relevant substances, and the underlying mechanisms thereof; the findings will be published in peer-reviewed journals.
• promote international collaborations, for example through model intercomparisons or data exchange, and contribute to international activities, such as those of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
• proactively apply the process-based understanding thus obtained to Earth system models, to better understand the system.
• be proactive in proposing cross-cutting research development strategies, while taking full advantage of Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) resources, including next-generation human resources.

· Researcher (Technology) is expected to conduct fundamental, originative, or advanced technology development and related research.

Principal Researcher:
Principal Researcher is expected to generate research results that lead Japan and the world and to provide appropriate advice and recommendations for highly professional decision making in the JAMSTEC management.

*Assigned affiliation will be determined at the time of appointment. However, there may be a change in affiliation in the case of reorganization of the Agency.
*At the time of appointment, the Job Title (Science/Technology) will be determined in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
Requirements The successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. in a closely related field of research or technology development.

Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
e.g., up to JPY 13,500,000

*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaw, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*Bonus and retirement allowance are included in the annual salary.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful applicant will receive relocation allowances in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(2) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) Employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) Housing lease service will be available in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.

*If you have not been awarded any, include "none" in the list.
f) 5 (or fewer) representative publications
g) 3 letters of recommendation from three senior research scientists (1 letter from each). 1 out of 3 letters should be written by a principal research scientist belonging a non-Japanese institution or university. The person providing the recommendation should E-mail to JAMSTEC directly with a signed letter as an attached file in PDF format. Please include "ESS AKS20-020 and the applicant's name" in the subject line. A letter of recommendation written by a JAMSTEC employee or a JAMSTEC visiting scientist will not be accepted.
