Environmental Geochemical Cycle Research Group, Earth Surface System Research Center (ESS), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC)
Recruitment of Postdoctoral Researcher (AGP20-028)

Available Position JAMSTEC is recruiting one position as a Postdoctoral Researcher (AGP20-028).
Environmental Geochemical Cycle Research Group, Earth Surface System Research Center (ESS), Research Institute for Global Change (RIGC)
Job Description We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position as part of an internal project titled “Development and application of advanced environmental observations utilizing a hyperspectral approach (FY2021-FY2023, Principal Investigator: Yugo Kanaya)”. The position will be based within the Environmental Geochemical Cycle Research Group, Earth Surface System Research Center (ESS), Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), where the research is to be conducted.
The successful applicant will work on the development or application of advanced environmental observations, such as those using a hyperspectral approach (*) to acquire new information relevant to global change, and elucidate interactions between the environment and human activities.
(*) Hyperspectral observations utilize information at ca. 100 or more wavelength bands to identify/classify species/states of the object in the field of view. Their application to the Earth observation is promoted in this project, noting their significant downsizing and wide industrial use in recent years.

[Target variables]
Target variables for observation or analysis should be chemical species or ecosystem parameters key to solving present/future environmental/climate issues; for example they may include (but are not limited to) floating marine debris, ocean color (including the detection of harmful algal blooms), marine ecosystems, air pollution gases, atmospheric aerosols, greenhouse gases, and land cover/ecosystem variables.

R&D approaches could include sensor development, field in-situ/remote observations, the development of algorithms based on radiative transfer models, utilization of satellite/space-based observations, or integration with numerical model simulations (any wavelength range for observations/development is possible for application). Collaboration with researchers affiliated with our group, with expertise in terrestrial ecosystems, ocean color, and atmospheric gases/aerosols, is possible.

[Relevant goals]
The project will contribute to social goals, such as sustainable development goals (SDGs), maritime domain awareness (MDA), or mitigation/adaptation regarding climate change, or to advanced understanding of natural processes.

[Relevant Research Fields]
Environmental science, Biogeochemistry, Oceanography, Atmospheric chemistry, Meteorology, Geochemistry, Ecology/Ecosystems, Vegetation geography, Remote sensing, Satellite observations, Field observations, Radiative transfer/Algorithm development, Spectroscopy, Numerical modeling, Computer/Mathematical science, and other related fields

Job Type Postdoctoral Researcher: To contribute to the project, a Postdoctoral Researcher should be able to independently conduct the research subject which is authorized by the Project under direction of a leader, and to be appointed to improve his/her research qualities.

*There may be a change in affiliation in the event of reorganization of the Agency.
Requirements Applicants are required to have been awarded or expect to have obtained a Ph.D. in a related field by the effective date of employment. In addition, no more than 5 years can have passed between the last day of the fiscal year in which the applicants obtained a Ph.D. and the effective date of employment.(i.e., applicants who earned a Ph.D. after April 2015 are eligible.)
