Job Description The Earthquake Forecasting Research Group, Research and Development Center for Earthquake and Tsunami Forecasting (FEAT) (Director:Takane Hori), Research Institute for Marine Geodynamics (IMG), JAMSTEC is soliciting applications for one position as a Scientist or Technical Scientist, who will participate in the medium to long-term plan.

[Research Description]
The Earthquake Forecasting Research Group contributes to development of methods for the monitoring and forecasting of spatio-temporal variation in slip at plate boundaries and their application to observed data for validation, development of quantitative evaluation methods for the detectability of observations on the seafloor, and continuous improvement of the methods through collaboration with the Earthquake and Tsunami Monitoring Group, the Research and Development Group for Seafloor Observatory, and the Subduction Dynamics Research Center

[Job Specification]
We are seeking a Scientist or Technical Scientist who can lead the aforementioned research and development. Several technological skills are required. These include development of appropriate mathematical models, crustal deformation calculation using the large-scale finite element method, and development of inversion and data assimilation methods. We are expecting a researcher, who can proactively and cooperatively promote the aforementioned research, has the motivation to open up a new directions of research in solid earth science, and is willing to contribute to disaster mitigation based on the scientific knowledge obtained.

Job Type Scientist: To contribute to the Agency, a Scientist is expected to perform world-leading research independently and share the results through scientific publications.

Technical Scientist: To contribute to the Agency, a Technical Scientist is expected to take a leading role in research, technology development, and technology innovation.

Requirements Scientist: The successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. and have a strong enough record to be a scientist in a closely related research field.

Technical Scientist: The successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. and have a strong enough record to be a technical scientist in a closely related research field.

Period of employment is from April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2025.

*Appointment date is negotiable.
*One contract period is a maximum of five fiscal years. The contract period will not be renewed.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*After undergoing an evaluation during the period of employment, the contract may be modified to one without termination (termination of employment would be at the end of the fiscal year in which the employee reaches the age of 60, or the age of 65 if the employee is rehired after his/her retirement). Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
e.g., JPY 6,000,000

*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaw, based on the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.
*There is no bonus or retirement allowance.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful applicant will receive a relocation allowance in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(2) An allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) The employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by the current statute.
(4) The JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) A housing lease service is available in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.

e) List of competitive research funds awarded to the applicant
*If you have not been awarded any, include "none" in the list.
f) 2 (or fewer) representative publications
g) 2 letters of recommendation from two senior research scientists (1 letter from each). The person providing the recommendation should email to JAMSTEC directly with a signed letter as an attached file in PDF format . Please include the applicant's name in the subject line. A letter of recommendation written by a JAMSTEC employee or a JAMSTEC visiting scientist will not be accepted.

(2) Submission:
