[Research description]
The GOORC focuses on ocean observation research to clarify the physical and chemical states of the ocean and their temporal development, and to uncover the mechanisms of various oceanic phenomena with the aim of producing accurate forecasts of future scenarios. The overarching research goal of the GOORC is to elucidate the functions and processes of the ocean in the Earth system. To this purpose, we conduct research and development at an international level.
In this context, we are recruiting a Principal Scientist or Principal Research Scientist to conduct ocean observation research, with particular focus on global oceanic change and its role in the Earth system. The successful applicant will also promote related activities at an international level.

[Research specification]
・The successful applicant will lead research and development in global oceanic change at JAMSTEC using mainly observational approaches, and will conduct comprehensive research activities to reveal the underlying mechanisms of oceanic change and their role in the Earth system. The applicant will publish the findings of these research activities in peer-reviewed journals.
・The successful applicant will promote international collaborations in global ocean observation research and contribute to international activities, such as the International Panel on Climate Change Assessment Report, as well as to domestic organizations.
・The successful applicant will strengthen the development of research encompassing optimized global ocean observation systems based on data on the oceans and statistical analyses.
・The successful applicant will advance data synthesis research based on observation (incl. remote sensing) and numerical model data to promote dynamic analysis and forecast studies.
・The successful applicant should be pro-active in introducing innovations in ocean observation technology and proposing cross-cutting research development strategies, taking full advantage of JAMSTEC’s broad scope of resources and next-generation human resource development.
