Job Description The Ocean Synthesis Research Group, the Global Ocean Observation Research Center, and the Research Institute for Global Change are collaborating on a project entitled "EnhanceD Data stream Analysis (EDDA): Combining Rough Path Theory and Machine-Learning Algorithms" (FY 2020-2023, PI: Nozomi Sugiura) funded by a grant-in-aid to the AIP Network Laboratory under the "AI Research in Japan, Germany and France" program. We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher experienced in research on and the development of machine-learning methods based on rough path theory.

[The research]
The EDDA project promotes the use of signatures, or iterated integrals, for statistical learning. Specifically, we use signatures, which play a central role in rough path theory, to gather sequential data in a novel manner, and have developed new machine-learning methods to obtain these data. We have been exploring the mathematical basis and development of machine-learning algorithms, and have demonstrated the effectiveness of our methods for sequential analysis of earth sciences data. The appointee will be expected to actively collaborate with researchers in Japan, Germany, and France to achieve the following goals:
1. Increase our understanding and development of relevant theories and algorithms, and enhance the feasibility of our applications.
2. Demonstrate the utility of our best applications for handling real data (e.g., earth science data including climate time series and oceanographic observation profiles), in collaboration with oceanographers, and use machine-learning to obtain practical results based on the theories developed in 1..
We welcome all applicants who are willing to tackle the difficult research topic of machine-learning from a novel rough path theory perspective.

[Expertise]
A background in mathematics (e.g., the theory of stochastic processes) is desirable; machine-learning experience and good Python coding skills are essential. Excellent English communication skills are required. An interest in earth sciences is desirable.

Job Type Postdoctoral Researcher: To contribute to the project, a Postdoctoral Researcher should be able to independently conduct the research subject which is authorized by the Project under direction of a leader, and to be appointed to improve his/her research qualities.

*There may be a change in affiliation in the event of reorganization of the Agency.
Requirements Applicants are required to have been awarded or expect to have obtained a Ph.D. in a related field by the effective date of employment. In addition, no more than 5 years can have passed between the last day of the fiscal year in which the applicants obtained a Ph.D. and the effective date of employment.(i.e., applicants who earned a Ph.D. after April 2015 are eligible.)

Working Conditions & Contract Period (1) Number of positions:

Total period will be terminated on the end of March, 2024 after two contract renewals.
*First contract period is from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022.
*Effective date of employment is negotiable.
However, it might be changed due to the influence of COVID-19 expansion.
*Contract period can be renewed depending on the performance and working attitude of the successful applicant.
*Contract period might change due to the budget constraints of the project.
*In accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.
*This position is a non-tenure-track, fixed-term employee position.
Salary Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
JPY 5,250,000
*There is no raise.
*Bonus and retirement allowance are included in the annual salary.
Terms of Employment (1) Upon appointment, the successful applicant will receive relocation allowances in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
(2) Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
(3) Employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
(4) JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
(5) Housing lease service is not available.
(6) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end, and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.

f) Two (or fewer) representative publications in PDF formats.

(2) Submission:
